Do you work for yourself or someone else? Just curious how many here are self employed vs working for someone else. The Poll is above please vote. Poll will close August 6, 2014.For those of you that work for someone else, have you ever thought about starting up your own business? This is my first post as a poll so If I mess it up I apologizeLast edited by AluminumWelder; 07-06-2014 at 03:46 PM.
Reply:I work for this little fly by night outfit (Boeing) at a hole in the wall facility (N.A.S.A.)I'd like to open a business but around where I live all I'd get would be farmers and guys wanting work done on their 4 wheelers. Two notoriously stingy groups (at least around here). Two turn tables and a microphone.

Reply:Welding is only one facet of my current job, and only when something breaks or needs to be fabricated (but, I guess that would be the case in any welding venue).Way back in the 1970s, I pretty much welded all day long in a heavy truck body shop (body shop as in: "you wreck 'em, we fix 'em", not building truck beds/bodies).At that time I was (thought I was) interested in working for a mechanical systems company welding pipe in low pressure boiler systems.  Even took an advanced welding course at a local Vo-tech school in the evenings after my day job to learn pipe welding.  Ha, the welding course went well, but the "prospective company" went t!ts up before I finished the class and hired on full time with them.I always considered that was actually a lucky break (in that I still had my steady job) for me because staying where I was eventually led me to my current job (been there since 1979 and hope to retire soon...................maybe in 2029).

Reply:Nice graph Dave, but are you sure that eyesight line levels off?  Mine seems to keep going downhill, along with some other faculties.  But hey, my debt seems to keep going up, thanks to the wife and the economy.

Reply:Does paying to work count? Some days I wonder why I bother going to work... I would have saved money staying in bed.
Reply:Completely self-employed since the late '90s. Mostly welding and other metal work, mostly art-related.A few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Work for someone else..Stability, beni's are nice. The demands not so much... Have had a couple of "my own shows", quite a while ago..See what happens in the future.Have enough / know enough to be dangerous
Reply:I work for someone else! I hate it, but man it is convenient!Im 100% tooled up (if there is such a thing) to go on my own, but I cant seem to leave. these guys have kept me fed, and never had a day off I didn't ask for since I started (as a high school grad in 07). so, now that I have stated my age, you may understand how I am learning loads of info about business every day still, and the more I learn the more nervous I become about starting this on my own, especially in California! I just journeyed out as a plumber, so I do intend on pursuing a plumbing license, and for welding I am certified in pipe/ structural, and am studying and plan on pursuing a license for that also. but I feel I need more time at a company before I attack bidding 100% on my own. it is bidding and law that scares me more than anything.bosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:I work for myself, have done for 20 odd years now, in the uk its the difference of about 150% in wages as compare to working for an employer. I remembered the worst welding job ever was all jig work in a production line, paying peanuts, had to stay there for 9 months and it was a hell of a place to work. Now i'm working for myself i get to do some great welding jobs both in the workshop and out on site, once you've experience working for yourself you need to have the confidence to be able to take on these big jobs and faith in your welding.
