Just wondering if dual core can be used as flux core without CO2 shielding gas?   Only asking cuz I have no use for dual core and the welder I just got came with a full 33 lb spool of ultracore 71c.   If not I will prob just give it away at the next Weld-o-rama if any takers.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:I would not think it would work. I never have but always wanted to try if you are giving it away and shipping was not bad I would float you a little extra. What size is it?
Reply:From my experience (not slot) it does cause porosity If you don't use co2 with dual shield  Sent from my XT881 using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk
Reply:The results would not be good. Probably not as bad as hard wire without gas but not really useful even for non-critical messing around. I would either get a bottle of CO2 or get rid of it.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Nope, will not work. makes a nice spongy mess, though.
Reply:It makes a lighter weight weld. But no not really it will not work
Reply:lol, lighter weight welds is right. I'm sure someone has found a use for those, some might consider them artistic!

Reply:Dual shield without gas welds worse than solid core without gas.  Even a slight breeze really messes with dual shield welding.

Reply:Hello soutthpaw, dual shield(technical name gas shielded flux-core arc welding wire: FCAW-G), has to be run with a shielding gas. There are some of the wires that are designed to be strictly used with CO2 shielding gas, some that are designed for use with 75Ar/25CO2 only, others designed for use with either of the aforementioned gases and still others that can be run with higher percentages of Argon as a part of the shielding mix with CO2. You will only know by the designations that are listed on the particular gas shielded flux-core arc welding wire. Flux core arc welding that is done without gas is specified as such(self-shielded flux-cored arc welding: FCAW-S) and is not to be run with a shielding gas. Detrimental metallurgical results will become a part of the weld metal if you introduce a shielding gas to the self-shielded wire. That's the short of the answer, there is a lot more that could be added here to explain all of the specific details. Best regards, Allanaevald

Reply:Someone once described it to me as butter. And that is exactly how I imagined it to be without ever using it. 7018 is not butter to me.
Reply:Dual shield requires gas shielding. The point of the dual shielding is because unlike er70s-6 solid mig wire which is a fast freeze wire, dual shield is not; to really burn in on thick steel sections like structural and pipe welding you need a ton of heat to generate a big fluid puddle that is capable of smoothly accepting high deposition rates of filler; you don't want a fast freeze mig wire. A slag shielding over the weld is required because the weld is still molten after the gas shielding zone has passed by. The inner shield is flux, like the outside of a stick rod. Dual shield is literally the stick welding process adapted to a wire feed process, which yields huge gains in deposition rate.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
