Anyone have any experience with these tig welders, parts or repair??Are they a good user friendly machine to use? Thanks
Reply:You are double posting from your same question in the everlast forum.   If u r wanting a recommendation as to what to buy. U shold tell us what type and thickness of metals u plan to weld,  you current welding experience, you budget for machine, gas, accessories, what u intend to build and if its for hobby , business etc.  Also do a search.    Basically u gotta ship it back to whatever chicom company built it for repairs etc.   If u want local service and easy parts availability u gotta go with qa quality name brand.   Red, blue, yellow etc.    Look at thermal arc, hobart, htp etc if u want quality at a cost below the big guys..Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:I just purchased a PowerTig 185 AC/DC seems to be a good smooth operating machine, had a few issue to work out but nothing serious, The controls are the opposite of a miller if you have not used one before you will get used to it in a hurry. The machine is light and easy to use.Have done some welding on New aluminum and stainless with very good results.Did a repair on a trailer fender this week .050 aluminum treadplate and it did just fine. They are made overseas but so are all the rest. In fact made in the same plant as thermal arc and some others. I have 2 red box tig Invertec machines in my shop both less than 5 years old with bad boards $760.00 and $910.00 each needless to say they are not getting repaired.Go to there web site for more details you can contact one of there sales people thru there site they all seem friendly and ready to help.

Reply:One just quit,( got it from a friend he said he used it 3 times) the 160 had the same problems as a lot of others, the 110/220 switch failed and took out the board. The local dealer said it is pretty common and suggested using the machine on 220 or 110 but not switching it from one voltage to another.I believe he said the machines were made by Selco in Italy.I tried looking around for a schematic but nothing showed up .

It just makes no sense at all to me.  Shouldn't EVERLAST be opening the machine, adjust the HF points and putting the knobs on correctly before shipping the machine to the customer?TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

Reply:I have no experience with Everlast, but I bought a Longevity weldall 256 pi more than a year ago, and I believe the experience with these two brands are similar, as the owners are somehow related and the machines are built in the same factory. When I bought the machine, I had just started a welding course at a tech school, and needed to practice in my hobby shop not knowing what would be my ultimate preferred process. I made an offer that was accepted at $1500 shipped which was a good deal in my mind for a fully equipped machine that would do ac/dc stick, tig and plasma and with pulse, variable frequency .... etc.The machine was quite satisfactory for a beginner doing tig and stick. However the plasma cutter did not work. After several emails and trying a new set of consumables and a new torch, the machine went back to Longevity and was replaced by a new one that works. The exchange was done at no cost to me but it was still a hassle for me. I am in Montreal, and Longevity ships to/from US only, their Canadian dealer is more expensive and has a limited warranty. So I ended up buying and paying for the replacement machine that they shipped to an address I use in upstate NY. When it got there I drove down with the old machine, told Canadian customs that it was going to the US for replacement, and drove back through customs half an hour later with the new one that went through with no paper work. Everlast paid for shipping both ways and credited back the cost of the second machine so it was zero cost.By then I had gotten to the tig part of the course, and I realized that I would be mostly using tig. My shop is air conditioned and tig is such a clean and neat process. I was so impressed with the Millers at school, so much easier to set up and smoother to operate. I eventually decided that I needed a 200dx that I bought a few months ago, the Longevity being used as a plasma cutter now. Just the ease of setting and using the foot pedal compared to the Longevity is reason enough for me. Also my US bought Dynasty is covered in Canada if I ever need repairs. One thing I really did not like about the Longevity when I opened it up to do adjustments: I am an electrical engineer, and the electronics look like a beta version with components soldered to the legs of other components and wires running all over the boards.

Reply:That stumped me too.  I know some of those chicom pedals have an adjustment knob for something on the actual pedal.   Or maybe he had a fingertip control.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Currently, we are not using any knob style foot pedals to my memory.  All are either controlled on the panel, or they are a smaller amperage welder where the foot pedal has full range control of the weld, like our PA 160STH that goes from 5-160 amps and overrides the amp knob.  It's decent enough for a price unit.. and satisfies the customer's demand for foot control.  But the more expensive units from the 200 DX and up are controlled at the knob for max amps.  We offer a US made pedal for the machine, and the old "chinese" pedals have changed and they are lower, and more stable now, with a greater balanced feel.  They are not the US pedal, but some people do prefer them once they try both.Last edited by lugweld; 09-04-2012 at 12:30 AM.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT

Was it an IGBT machine or MOSFET? Do you know the difference between the two? If you think those are junk, don't tell all the people who are buying welders from eastwood because they are buying longevity welders with a different decal.
Reply:Yeah I really see no practical purpose for a knob on the pedal.   seems like a cheap way of getting around an issue that should have been built into the machine function in the first place.    thanks for the clarification on the pedal issueTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:Originally Posted by BCTimberwolfThere are differences between machines and manufacturers. All the chicoms aren't equal. The PP256 from everlast is controlled just like a miller. You set the max amps on the machine and the pedal varies it. I'm sure it was a typo, but I don't see why you clearly state it was a longevity then say everlast took care of shipping. My bashing point was that you were saying it had a crappy design for the foot pedal and that you were saying everlast and longevity were the same design. I reckon a little proof reading would have cleared that up. Plus I have no way of knowing it was IGBT unless you were to have previously stated it. The prior machines were MOSFET machines and were the ones that originally had that foot pedal design.
