Hey all,I am just wondering what tools would be needed to re cut or cut splines on an axle ? What is the process ? Yes I am just new on the metal fabrication scene so I do not have much experience in the field !Any help would be appreciated !
Reply:Depending on the size, and amount of splines you can do it on a rotary table in a vertical mill. But, the correct way is with a broach. Is this an ATV application by any chance? Broaches are very expensive (Upwards of a $1,000 depending on the complexity and oddballness of the spline your wanting to cut.) Most of the time you can get a good used axle with a minimal investment compared to spline broach.
Reply:Yeah it is for atv axles ! I was just wondering out of curiosity how it was done because I have had stripped splines on atv axles before. But I just had the axle welded to the crown gear (cheap fix I know but the atv wasnt worth getting the axle resplined and the crown gear was in bad shape)... I have also had axles resplined before but I didnt bother to ask the machine shop about the process !Thanks !!!!
Reply:SIR,splines can be cut with a gear cutter. i recentlymade a shaft for a mower that had 13 teeth 16pitch. after cutting it down on a lathe to the properdiameter, i set it up in a dividing head, and cut the teeth on it. the blank was 4140 HT. 13 teeth was 3 turns, and 3 holes, on a 39 hole index plate.i had the mating part, so i was able to check the fit,and it was good.wlbrown
Reply:Mr Brown, when you referenced a gear cutter this gear cutter an attachment on your lathe or a seperate tool? That sounds like rather machinist type of work. I just a simple welder/fab man never done much in the machinist type work, but sure do get fascinated by it.IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:im thinking he used a gear hob or a mill that would work to chuck
Reply:TX,i have a knee mill, (vertical mill), clone of abridgeport. JET, JTM-1. this is what i usedto cut the teeth on the spline.wlbrown |
