Bending Angle Iron

can you bend say half inch angle iron with a cheapy shop bender made for bending flat, round and square stock? Im talking bending it with one flat edge staying horizontal and the other verticle.Last edited by coachgeo; 01-01-2006 at 09:53 PM.

That is twice now someone has thrown out there that Im attempting some trolling.  You got the wrong friggen guy if your thinking that route.  Heck I've moderated on bulletin boards for over 4 years now so how about we get back to bizI have a bender and  I need angle iron bent into about a 2 1/2 foot diameter cirlcle to make a different hatch to fit atop my Unimog. When I find a shop to rent and get set up I can try it myself.  Till then not a damn thing wrong with asking if anyone has experience bending angle iron.

Reply:I think for one, for your unimog, Harv hit the nail on the head with the weld together two flat pieces technique. You cannot bend angle iron with a hundred dollar harbor freight bender. Just wont do it. A real hossfeld will do it, but the bender is $800 new, and figger another grand for the angle tooling. I have bent a lot of angle with my hossfeld, and it works, especially flange in, but it is never perfectly flat- it bows a bit when you do it. Much better is my $8000 powered angle rolls- they will do what you want, no problem. So, if you insist on doing it yourself, try bending one flat bar the easy way, and one the hard way, and welding them together. Although I dont think bending flat bar the hard way is something those HF benders do real well. Once again, the hossfeld with the angle dies is great at this- but once again, 2 grand for one, new. Much better to just pay to have this done by somebody with powered angle rolls. I have a couple of places down the road from me who have them- a big sheet metal HVAC company, and an aluminum boatbuilder- and both will bend a circle like you want for maybe 50 bucks.
