Hey guys i am looking to build a small welding table for my garage, most likely 4 feet long by 2feet wide to sit against the wall.  My question is for the support i am going to be using box steel and then wheels on the bottom.  My question is what size box steel do you recommend using?
Reply:How thick of a top and what's the heaviest thing you're going to put on it?
Reply:Most likely not more than 150 pounds.  Top sheet probably less then half an inch thick
Reply:1.5x1.5x3/16" tubing would be more than enough for that size table and load. Even angle iron that size would probably be plenty with a cross brace between all four legs, either way you go. Then you can have a shelf on the cross braces for stuff.
Reply:yeah i was curious to see how small i could go as the box steel can get expensive.
Reply:To tell the truth 1.25X1.25 11 gage would most likely do fine if you are wanting to go as small as possible with material size. I built the rack for my truck out of that size and have hauled way more than twice the weight you mentioned for your table with no problem. It's had more than 1000lbs. on it at times, and that is with all the road vibrations and wind loading too.
Reply:Mine is 3x5x3/8" and is supported with 2" angle (1/8") and re-bar for gussets. It would easily handle 500# or better. I keep it against the wall so I don't have it on casters. Got it for free off Craigslist....

Reply:I say go with tubing, it is just easier to weld cross bracing to.
