So today I decided I'm bored just welding straight lines on a plate for practice so decided to cut up a few bits and make a small box just to practice welding in different ways....had it all cut out (roughly....not too handy with a grinder yet ) and just tacked it together when....I RAN OUT OF FLUX WIRE  that put a stop to my practice  it was too late in the evening all the shops were closed so have to get some tomorrow but we are in for wet weather again for a few days so no more fun for a wile  I really need to get a small shelter built soon, and then I decided I'm not waiting any longer to buy a respirator after reading the empty flux wheel that says it "produces chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects or reproductive harm" ....sounds fun!!  time to go buy a respirator quick
Reply:Just for your information, just about everything known to man has been determined by the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects or reproductive harm. .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Haha  ok I don't feel so bad now  but I will buy one anyway I've mild asthma so better to be safe than sorry  And I need to learn to keep an eye on my wire roll to make sure I don't run out just as I try to do something
Reply:Kinda tough welding with a respirator under a standard welding shield. On the occasions when I absolutely have to...I own a special Darth Vader looking shield with bond outs for the cartridges to fit. No fun to use at all. As a beginner, and if you'de like to escape the smoke...I would set up an old (or new) range hood just over your head...and run some accordian hose out to somewhere. I have a powerful sucker unit in my ceiling which keeps my shop clear. So far so good after 25 years...clean, strong lungs and minimum brain damage. Reply:Originally Posted by Stick-manAs far as respirators go, I use a 3M 7500 with the 2097 (or 2091) filters. It vents downward which helps with fogging, and is low profile with those flat filters. I use this under a Pipeliner hood which is a compact hood. It took a little while to get used to the mask, but now it's nothing.

Reply:I would bet that even cancer drugs have a "this product is suspected to cause cancer even though there's no definitive clinical evidence to support such a claim" label in California. You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE

Reply:Cali is just a stupid expensive state. I mean in order for a tractor trailer to enter the state, it must be washed within a few hours of arriving and must have the wash ticket handy. Most products that say "may contain lead" that don't actually have lead in them usually put that on the package because somewhere in that facility lead is used and it may float through the air and come in contact with a lead free product. I see it in the food industry all the time. One customer of mine has a very large produce contract and there packaged grapes only, says, may contain traces of peanuts, egg, or other stuff because one day a week that one conveyor system might have been in contact with one of these other foods.
Reply:just wait till you go mig and you forget to turn the bottle off after you've run out of wire and it's a weekend and you can't get to the LWS. so once you get your wire and you go back to start welding are realize the tank you've used for maybe 1/2 hr or actual weld time is empty. a lesson learned the first time. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:Cali sounds like a nightmare  glad things aren't so strict over here  @ThorsHammer...I'm sure I will do that when I move to mig, just one of those mistakes I'm sure lots of people make once and hopefully once only

Reply:I bought a 2x4 at Lowes with that same message.  Not a pressure treated 2x4, just a plain ordinary pine 2x4 that was probably grown near my house in Louisiana."G"ConductorX - The Volkswright Shophttp://volkswright.blogspot.com/http://bugwerks.blogspot.com/Miller DVI w/Spoolgun - Miller Plasma Cutter
