Finally finished the lathe bench far enough to get some pictures together. Wish I had followed your lead and welded the framework up with the TIG as it would have given me much needed practice. Anyway, scrap steel, aluminum roadsigns and a lot of hours. BTW, I'll know never to use the aluminum roadsigns ever again as I am not a painter and had to redo them too many times. Also, never going to go cheap on drawer slides again. I usually use K & V slides, but this time found some cheaper ones on eBay...not worth the savings as they had fewer attachment points and far less 'wiggle' room. Here are the pics. The oak holder for my fish gauge, caliper, rule, etc. slides on runners. Reply:A few more pictures. The six legs each has a 1/2" bolt and jumb nut for leveling the lathe when I get it in the corner and off the caster dollies. Final shot is the 'Before" picture. Reply:Looks great! Nice job
Reply:Nice job, Roy!  I'll give it a 99/100, only because I don't see a beverage holder.  Proper coolant is important."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Roy that cabinet looks fantastic...........The mix of steel and aluminum is really subtle...... Yet the skill in putting them together is noticable......Well done!!!Precision TIG 185 and MP 210Bobcat 225NTCutmaster 42O/A tanks.... 2 Argon tanks...... 2 C25 TanksFacebook...... Reply:Thanks Fexal. You got me off my tail to get this project done. No more aluminum road signs until I can set up a spray booth and find a real use for that Quincy compressor of mine. BTW, the cabinet has a lot of heavy steel in it besides the lathe sitting on top. The top alone is about 280 lbs. Built it heavy and hope to load the bottom shelves with toolpost grinder, dividing head, 5C indexer, etc. for additional weight. Top will have a lathe chuck storage rack one day...another project I haven't even started...  Attached ImagesLast edited by WyoRoy; 02-08-2013 at 08:46 PM.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.

Reply:I really want a lathe...... I was just commenting about it at work yesterday........I don't know how to operate it..... But I sure do want one.....Dad had one and was an expert with it........ I was 7 and squandered the chance to learn.......If only only I knew then....... Reply:Fexal,A lathe opens up a heck of a lot of opportunities...though I'd have to say a mill may open a few more doors. Downside, sure, lathe and mill are cheap compared to the tooling! You do want to see that daughter of yours receive a good education? I was lucky enough to start the machining side of my hobbies back when tooling was going for next to scrap value on eBay when the Rust Belt and the east coast were having shops drop like flies in a DDT fog...plus no kids...other than myselfLast edited by WyoRoy; 02-08-2013 at 09:19 PM.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
