I have a small gas tank off my Weldanpower I cleaned out with diluted muriatic acid.  It had a small hole in it that I welded up and it doesn't leak anymore.  I am considering putting some kind of sealer inside the tank but have never used any.  Is it worth the effort?  The tank has one baffle with one ~ 5/8" hole in the very bottom.  From what I've read you have to put the epoxy in the tank and roll it around.  Just wondering how well this will work with the baffled tank, and how do you address the threaded outlet in the bottom of the tank?
Reply:I've used the KBS Coatings kit. It's a 3 step process that will take you about 2 hours total work time spread out over about 4 days. The result is  very satisfying. To coat the baffle you will need to get the coating about where the baffle is and then roll the tank again and again to get the coating to flow onto the baffle. You will need some good temporary plugs to keep the cleaner, etching solution, and epoxy coating in the tank during each step. Plan on replacing these plugs after the 3 step process process is completed.  You can temporarily seal the pin holes from the outside with duct tape and remove it after the coating step is complete and dry. Remove the plugs and dump out any excess epoxy after you are sure everything inside is coated. Clean the threads in the ports carefully or you will need to re-tap the threads later. Then let the tank air dry for 24 hours without the plugs. It's worth doing if you can't buy a replacement tank at a reasonable price.CharleyMiller MM252Miller Bobcat 225NTMiller DialArc HF / DIY Cooler2 Victor O/A TorchsetsMilwaukee 8" Metal SawMilwaukee Dry Cut "Chop" Saw 5 Ton Wallace Gantry Various Grinders, Benders, etc.
Reply:About what viscosity is the epoxy and how much is used for a 1 1/2 gallon tank?
Reply:It's not that thick actually. It will run everywhere pretty easily. It sure won't take much for that small a tank either. I did the tank on my 4020 with it and it was supposed of taken two quarts of the sealer. When I got done I'm pretty sure I could of gotten by with one since I ended up pouring out over 1 quart.   I also became a BIG fan of there degreaser while doing this and now buy it 5 gallons at a time. It's the best stuff I've used in a LONG time.  Looks like they sell a kit for a motorcycle tank that will do what you need. http://www.kbs-coatings.com/cycle-tank-sealer-kit.htmlMillermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:It's about the consistency of pancake syrup and you have about an hour to roll the tank and pour out the excess, then it starts getting thicker. I bought a kit to do a 6.5 gallon tank and it would have done one about 8 gallons with no problem. 1.5 gallons is kind of small. Do you have another tank that you can do at the same time? I think their smallest kit will do a 5 gallon tank. You're going to spend about $40 plus shipping for their small kit. Are you sure you can't just buy a replacement tank? Go to their website and look around. Then watch their video on Youtube as well. Do a Youtube search for "KBS motorcycle gas tank sealer".  Follow the instructions and your tank will be like new inside again. Oh, I had a 1/4" outlet on my tank and the line ran inside across the bottom to about the tank bottom center. I used a fat pipe cleaner to clean the excess coating out of this tube after draining as much coating out of the tank as possible. It worked perfectly. Reply:Pipeliner, I have used U.S. Standard Fuel Tank Sealer to seal a fuel tank on my Troybuilt rototiller.  Comes in an 8 oz. can and after draining it out after using it, still have approximately 2/3 of a can left for another job.  The tank is about 2 gallons (I think). (www.por15.com).  This stuff really works!   Best regards,  Bob
Reply:Well looks like the cost of the sealer kit will outweigh just building a new tank.  I have pressure tested it after welding the hole up and had no leaks so I may put a new filler neck on it and use it.  I can build one easy enough but hard to justify $40 for the sealer for such a small tank.  Thanks for the replies everyone.
Reply:One thing you might look into is Seal All. It's the best thing I've found to fix holes in tanks like that. http://www.eclecticproducts.com/sealall.htmMillermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
