I have a prototype I am building and needs some of the brackets galvanized. There will be a total weight of roughly 100 pounds that needs galvanizing, all raw steel, and I can't find anyone who will do this for less than $200. I've been back and forth with the customer on this and they are requiring galvanized. Stainless brackets are way too expensive and cold galvanizing doesn't have the handling durability they need. Any suggestions?John 3:16(2) Miller Pheonix 456(2) Millermertic 252Dynasty 210DXHobart 210MVPDoringer D350 SA Cold SawScotchman 350LT Cold SawWebb 10x50 MillWebb 15x40 LatheGeka Bendicrop Ironworker
Reply:Hello Econdron, check with shops in your area and see if you can piggy-back your order onto theirs. This is relatively common in my area, I would guess that others would consider doing it too. It doesn't hurt to throw a little something extra their way to assist in "making it happen".  Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:I thought the same thing. The problem is I need it done soon. Like within a week or two at the most and no local shops had any planned galvanizing jobs. And some just straight up refused. I did find a place that said they would charge me the $200, but then on the remainder after the prototype was approved, they would credit me $150. So I think I'll go with that if I can't find anything.John 3:16(2) Miller Pheonix 456(2) Millermertic 252Dynasty 210DXHobart 210MVPDoringer D350 SA Cold SawScotchman 350LT Cold SawWebb 10x50 MillWebb 15x40 LatheGeka Bendicrop Ironworker
Reply:At least that sounds reasonable. I know you already realize that the reason for such high minimum charges is due to the same set-up to process for 100#s as for 1000#s so they have to cover their costs. Good luck and I'd like to see your finished project if you can share here. Best regards, Allanaevald

Reply:You can get galvanize spray paint. It's used a lot in the industrial construction electrical industry. It works very well if you only have small pieces to treat.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:I used to hate how every time I posted a question on here, all you guys read into the back story and gave me advice on everything BUT what I was asking. But now I look back at some of the things you've all said and I guess there's that famous saying "treat the illness, not the symptoms". So while I'm trying to get advice on the symptoms, ya'll are giving me advice on the "illness", which I have learned to really appreciate while I get more and more into welding and business.Back to the thread, I have a written contract guaranteeing the construction of at least 6 more after the prototype. This contract was read over by, and undersigned by my attorney. I received a 50% down deposit for the prototype which more than covered materials. However, the contract does allow for changes to the design, but any costs left over from old materials or from switching must be paid for by the buyer. So if they decide they don't want the brackets galvanized after the prototype, they would be bound by the contract to pay the remaining $150. They have way more invested in this project than I do, so them refusing to pay the $150 would cause me to put everything on hold, which would cost them even more as they are trying to market and sell these structures. Could this get ugly real fast? Definitely. But at least I have my 50% deposit and a signed contract. I don't have any galvanizers that are within an hour or two from me in northern Illinois, so I will be having these brackets shipped. So since I am shipping, it may not make a difference whether I am shipping to somewhere else in Illinois or somewhere in Ohio, etc.John 3:16(2) Miller Pheonix 456(2) Millermertic 252Dynasty 210DXHobart 210MVPDoringer D350 SA Cold SawScotchman 350LT Cold SawWebb 10x50 MillWebb 15x40 LatheGeka Bendicrop Ironworker
