So I'm finally feel confident in my flat, horizontal, filet, and lap joint welds. So time to tackle open root no backing, vertical, overhead. Soninbought some 5-1/2" sch40 pipe. Root with 1/8" 6010 at 93-98ish amps went alright I had to grind out a few times because I didn't get a keyhole and didn't get full pen on inside. Well anyway got that sorted and bottom I the pipe I can't get it to keyhole real nice and stick filler. It just blows a giant hole in the pipe. This is down hand any ideas?? Now fill I was using 7018 1/8 at something like 80 amps going up hold corners quick across center. Puddle looks alright undercuts the bevels extremely bad? I'm i moving too quick? I thought of trying 3/32 rod at like 65-70 does that sound more appropriate?
Reply:Sounds like you need lower amps for the 6010 root. I have never used downhill though so don't know for sure. 1/8" 7018 at 80 amps is way to low.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:If you try the 3/32 7018 you should be around 85-90 amps.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:What was your land and gap on the root? I run bout 1/16 gap and a 3/32 land at 90-100 amps and push her in. As for the 7018 80 sounds al little cold I run 3/32 at 80-90 you may try holding longer on the sides.Lincoln 305gLincoln 225 tombstone More tools than I can play with at one time

Reply:Try a two count or two heartbeats on the sides. Watch the arc and puddle. The arc undercuts as soon as you hit the side. Takes about two heartbeats to fill it back up. If it will help you to know what you are seeing, only worry about one side to start. If you can see the left side better, watch only it. Swing out to the right for two counts but you only care what the left is doing when you come back. And slower, most try to go to fast. Let the slag run, its not the weld! Pretty soon vertical up and overhead will be your favorite welds!!!! ChuckTo ride, shoot straight, and speak the truth. This was the ancient law of youth. Reply:Well I have been practicing weaves but I'm still having a hard time with overhead. I'll have to get pictures. I've gotten a lot better on my roots but in still not happy with itSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:Is that picture the 6010 root? If it is then i think you need to push the electrode deeper into the joint. You shouldhear the arc change as it pushes into the pipe.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG

Reply:Your first pic shows no bevel if your not beveling there is no land do a search there are threads that show properly prepped pipe once you get that done we can talk about welding

Reply:Alright I got my roots down close enough that with about 100lbs more 5p+ I may be able to get a job. Cap I feel like I have that down just need toget more comfortable on the bottom of the pipe big question now. Hot pass I'm using 3/32 7018 I want to say my amperage is 84-87 I'll have to look at the machine when I get home. What technique do you guys use for hot pass? Up hill down hill, stronger weave??? I'm trying a single stronger because my mine weave produces the same result. Any insight is appreciated. slag is on the left so ignore that pleaseSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:go with the 3/32 7018. If they let me, I always run a downhill hot pass with 6010.I don't think you have the cap down quite as much as you think. smaller rod, way more practice.Last edited by TimmyTIG; 07-08-2014 at 03:12 PM.
Reply:I think I have two worm holes in those caps aside from that I'm happy with it considering I'm not comfortable and it's freehandSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:As I see it right now, your cap won't pass a visual inspection. Height of the cap is inconsistent, width is also inconsistent and there is a lot of undercut present. Your restarts also need work, they are too noticeable. You need to improve the appearance. It isn't up to snuff to be doing pressure code work.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:What is acceptable cap height I was trying to find that and it was anywhere from 1/16" to 1/8" does that sound correct?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:My thoughts are that your still too hot and fight your puddle. learn which settings can give you the lowest amperage that will keep your arc going smoothly and fusing the sides well. The cap pass will be an even lower setting due to heat from previous passes. Doing a cap pass with 7018 I try to just do a steady uphill progression with just enough front to rear whip.(slow whip, not fast.) to keep stacking the puddle back on itself. gives a nice convex bead with ripples that look like a downflat 7018 weld.
Reply:Hot pass 3/32 7018 at 74-77amps. I know it isn't good any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:bump up the heat to 85-95 and keep practicing.
Reply:Does the bed run pretty quick? The longer I take I run the higher it is drastically. I'm guessing it takes me about 30-45 seconds to run from the bottom most vertical point of the pipe to the highest vertical point of the pipe the pipe is 3". Is it putting in so much because I'm cold or is that just the nature of it? Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkOriginally Posted by TimmyTIGbump up the heat to 85-95 and keep practicing.
Reply:I'm not trying to be rude, but it doesn't look like you're ready for pipe, yet. You would be better served just practicing running beads until you get that down. At this stage you're somewhat wasting your time prepping those bevels when you need to get the feel of just running beads. Grind the pipe clean and just run beads up the outside of it till you get a feel for it. Then get in a bevel.Keep practicing. It takes a lot of hood time.
Reply:I'd rather you tell me I'm doin something wrong and guide me in the right direction instead of trying to save my feelings. I wish to do this for a living. I don't necessarily mean pipeline. It just so happens I've acquired a stupid amount of pressure pipe. With that being said. 1/8" rod 114amps I want to run it a little colder but the rheostat in my machine doesn't work under 4 so I'm s.o.l.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:I think you would get much better use of your time to work on these, in all positions. Once you get them down, don't use the backing bar, and work on open root. Then move onto pipe. Reply:We can't really teach you how to weld over the internet. We can get you in the ballpark as far as heat range, but you have to learn how to manipulate that metal yourself. It'd be better if you had somebody there watching you to give you some pointers.Other than that, it's just something you have to learn by doing it. It's pretty hard, not something you're gonna pick up in a few weeks. You just have to be patient and keep at it. You'll get there. Here's pic of a 1/8th 7018 cap I did on some heavy wall pipe in a power plant a few years back. This would be considered acceptable most places.Last edited by TimmyTIG; 07-30-2014 at 05:49 AM.
Reply:I've been practicing everyday for the past few months. I know my welds aren't by any means the best. Which is why I post here for some insight into my problem. I don't have any what is consider to be good welders willing to help me aside from my father Inlaws father. He was a boilermaker I believe for 35yrs he helps when he comes over but he's 75 an he visits less frequently now. So until I can save the 5k for school I'm on my own. Any other tips be sure to share. C.E.P. I went on the was site to look for te test guidelines for other Tests and I couldn't find them. I did come across books for nearly $300 but I don't think I'll be buying them. I have to go buy some 3/8 and 1/4 plate for testing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:For way under $300.00 you can do everything yourself. Grind or use a saw to cut your bevels. Build or buy a small shop press, and make a coupon bender attachment. Then you'll see how your welding is coming along. Reply:When I built my coupon bender attachment, I went through my scrap pile, used couple of the rolls from my compact bender, and had to buy some 5/8-inch flat washers. Reply:I'm assuming all the rollers in the bender or 1" or does it not matter so Long as the die is a certain size? I have a press a nice little box to contact flying debri would be nice though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:I use to have the AWS spec saved, but I can't find them right now. If I remember correctly AWS requires the center part, where the coupons wrap around be 1 1/2-inches in diameter. Then just space the other rolls out far enough for clearance for at least 3/8-inch thick coupons to pass by.Here is another version of a coupon bender. Reply:CEP, thanks for the plans and pictures. I've seen some you've posted before and has been a big help. I really want to learn what I can about these tests and start practicing as well. I plan to take some classes starting in Jan but who wants to wait until then!? Always like to get a head start when I can SeanMiller CST 280Lincoln 210 MP
