Here are a couple of steel sculpture stands I made.  The one on the right was adapted from a 4-leg flat top clay stand I got somewhere long ago.  When I made the one on the right, I shortened it for height variation.  Both have a collar for height adjustment, rotating, then a lower peg to lock and prevent rotation.  The parrot vices are interchangeable, and mount in three positions.  These things have undoubtedly saved my back and shoulders much misery by enabling me to stand up straight or sit up straight with the work at just the right height. Reply:Any pics of the sculptures?
Reply:Haha, just saw your other thread!
Reply:Better pictures, to see detail anyway.  My camera made some wacky decisions and I am just learning to use Gimp. Reply:Thanks.  I need round for adjustability.  I made an insert with a Park bicycle tube vise in place of the parrot vise for the big one too, which adds another dimension of spin, but I haven't found a use for it yet.  By attaching temporary supports to a round tube, I can spin the piece using the parrot vise, as with the ones attached to the wings of this thing, whereas the square tube attached to the body cannot be rotated in the vise. Reply:Great looking work stands.  I have had an idea for a while of something similar, for the artistic work I do.I really like the art you do!  You have turned that sketch into reality.KevKevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio

Reply:You and I think a lot alike...I have been planning a work-holding unit very similar to your vices for quite a while.  I have been thinking lately (as I go to my son's orthodontics appointments) just how cool of an adjustable work table I could make with the base of the dental chair.I dig your artwork (both the drawing and the final creation). Thanks for the kind words!KevKevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio

Reply:Thanks.  That's some impressive forging gear.  I've never done forge work but I've been around it, including tool making and damascus work.  It's called a Parrot Vise or Versa Vise.  You can get vintage US-made ones with more interesting jaws by looking up the latter on ebay, and newer Chinese knock-offs come from many places.  They are popular with guitar makers and such.  I like them because the jaws are structurally more stable than a standard vise, and more tolerant of clamping lopsided or off-center objects.  The side-flip thing is occasionally useful.  I switched after breaking a couple of normal ones.  I got mine from one of those woodworking supply places.  The green ones seem built to tighter tolerances than the light blue ones, I threw a light blue one away for being too sloppy to even clamp squarely and hold a round rod.___________________________www.kevinwilbanks.comSmith AW series torch systemVictor 2-stage regulatorsWilbanks adjustable parrot vise standsHarbor Freight 6x48 belt sanderBeverly ShearMetabo, Bosch, Makita grinders
