So, if a person were building a propane grill, should they use flashback arrestors, like the ones on a torch?Yes or no? Discuss...Thanks in advance [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:If you burner assembly is built correctly (i.e.  gas orifices, air mixture, etc.) there should be no need for a flashback arrestor .Miller 211Miller T-bolt ac/dcVictor o/aMilwaukee ChopsawDewalt, Milwaukee minigrinderDelta drill pressDelta bench grinderair grinder, die grinderHF pipe benderHF horizontal bandsaw
Reply:Acetylene need flash back arrestors because acetylene will explode once it reaches a certain pressure. That is why is stored in solution with acetone with the acetone mixture contained with in a porous media inside the cylinder.Propane does not explode under pressure. That is why you simply compress propane until it forms liquid and store it in fairly pure form in an empty hollow cylinder. If you try to do that with acetylene, you have a huge bomb that will explode.Propane and acetylene both burn but beyond that the similarities are few.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:This should be a hot topic.Torch setups (Propane, Acetylene ect..) and grills are totally different , A torch has oxygen/fuel mixture as a grill only has propane coming out at the end of the line or nozzle. Now say if you're tank was running low on propane and the line developed a hole, It could cause a venturi effect and blow up your line.  Small 35lb cylinders which are typically exchanged at stores or gas stations are usually out of date and the companies who fill them don't purge or fill the cylinders correctly which could have a fuel mixture enough to blow a line but not the tank. I could think of many scenarios where a flashback arrestor would come in handy and many will probably tell you that you don't need one but at the end of the day just install one for safety, especially if you're building a grill for someone. Its better to be safe then sorry so why risk it over a couple of bucks. I am assuming you're planing on a grill build for youtube ? If so make sure to mention the use of arrestors, especially for those who follow blindly.
Reply:Properly designed propane grill burners have an opening to regulate air fuel mix. The propane is "injected" into the mixer under high pressure though a restricted orifice called a jet, and draws in the correct amount of air by venturi effect. It is not a closed loop like in a torch. if there is a flashback, the flame would vent out the venturi ports before it would ever force its way back through the venturi jet. I think there is absolutely no reason to have a flashback arrestor as a result. In addition, They are not required by code, and there is in fact a federal code dictating several safety featured required on all grills since 1996. So I can't imagine there is a need. If there was even a remote need for a flash arrestor on a grill they would have mandated it by now.Miller Multimatic 255
