Well decided to finally give this a go:3/32" - 2% Lanthanated Tungsten1/16" - FillerIf I wasn't out of 1/16" tungsten, I would have used that as the arc stability wasn't all that great with the 3/32" tungsten. Attached ImagesLast edited by dj55b; 02-09-2013 at 09:25 PM.
Reply:Congrats, I need to give that a try next week when I can fill the tank.Harbor Freight Inverter 130 amp DC stick/tig (sold, really!)Lincoln Square Wave Tig 175 AC/DC stick/Tig
Reply:Back in my welding school years, that was part of our class.  Only myself and one other guy could do it.  I really enjoyed that class.---No good deed goes unpunished---

Reply:My neighbor wants me to weld on some car panels. I took some scrap home and tried, Can't do it as I can scratch tig but my arc welder won't go low enough and for some reason, the lower half of the dials on my Miller Mig won't give me the proper combination of wire speed verses voltage. One is either too high or the other is too slow.I don't like Car bodies anyways, so this is not critical. But if dj55b was close by, I would recommend him as new car materials are not much thicker than those popcans!Last edited by drujinin; 02-12-2013 at 10:49 AM.Reason: left out a keyword
Reply:You done well using a 3/32 and 1/16.  I tried this in 09 when I was down on my back and since I have changed computers I cannot locate picture, but I think the tungsten was 1/16 and filler .040......I think.  Anyway, good jobI found it, here is an entire thread on cans, I misquoted in the thread, I did use .040 not .020 http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=3114&page=5GeezerPower Mig 255C185 TIGBlue 175 MIGRanger 8 Kohler 20HP1974 5K Lincoln/Wisconsin Powered (Cherry)Victor/Harris O/AK 487 Spool Gun

Reply:Well I just finished doing my second attempt. Now that I have 1/16" tungsten, I was able to keep my even tighter, with almost 0 arc wonder. Still used the same 1/16" filler though. For the people that may have arc wonder, try pushing a little harder on your pedals to help focus that arc in there. And just your tungsten as close as humanly possible. I'll get some pictures up as soon as my camera batteries charge up a bit.
Reply:Here's that picture! Camera really didn't want to focus properly today. Attached Images

Reply:That is a great idea, now I can drink a beer, flip it over, and drink another. What do you mean I gotta empty the cans first?
Reply:I use 1/16" tungsten and 1/16" wire. Pop ya a hole in the bottom of each can and go.Melt-n-Metal
Reply:I used to make my guy's do it, but after the 12th beer the welds looked a little worse.  You would think practice makes perfect, not in thi case.  Then it was on to acetylene nacho's.

Reply:That's after you drink the twelve beers, put chips and cheese on the welding table and act lik Julia Childs.  Proane nachos taste a lot better, acetelyne leaves an after taste.  My memory was we used .040 pure (green) tungstens for cans.
