Alas!  Lit up the MM175 today in DCEP mode and ripped some welds on a flat 2" x 6" x 1/8" coupon of HRS using 0.030 solid wire.  Did not remove the mill scale. Need to buy replacement grinding discs.  Ha!  Anyways, laid the beads at a V/WS setting of "4.5 / 60", respectively.  Based on the MM175 product literature, believe this equates to a V or WS of ~ 13.5 Volts and 400 IPM.  True?  Planning to safely Fluke the Volts at this setting to confirm.  The images show the solid wire welds.  Front and back sides.  Noticed the Si flakes in the top surface of the weld beads.  Self-Assessment:  Sketchy start....ran fast for a bit...settled in, but still fast-ish w/ pointed ends....thinned out or ran fast 3/4 of the way through....slowed a bit for the last 1/5th....and obtained porosity at the end.  Ha!  The journey has begun.  Also, "pulled" this line a la FCAW technique.  On subsequent welds, plan to baseline using the "push" method with C25.  A good approach??Also had the opportunity to run with FCAW 0.030 today.  Realized that removing the mill scalle assisted in laying down a good bead.  Still, working with FCAW reminded me of SMAW via a Gun.  Imagine That!  "Pulled" instead of "pushed" worked best during the runs, and also reduced spatter.   Once the heat was advanced, noticed that removale of the slag vis a vis raking the hammer worked well.  Not giving up on FCAW!!Could be me, but the FCAW runs sounded like "sizzling bacon" and the Gas runs sounded like "swarming bees".  A higher frequency for the C25 weld.  Planning to run lap/fillet and "Ts" tomorrow, as tonight is my bride's night  WIll def remove the millscale via the 4-1/2 angle grinder before welding.  Remembering to not long-arc it.  Really like this used MM175!Appreciate your feedback (@ weldermike, et al) and tips for making improved welds.    Seat/helmet time is at the top of my list. And, realize that f/b from only a single pass is not super productive.   I'll def post the lap/fillets and Ts ripped at several V/WS combos.Shaka! Attached Images
Reply:I have a MM175 and it works really well!!  I don't care for the firepower wire that my local napa has but the machine works great!!  You have a great start.
Reply:I found the settings recommend on the machine a little cold. I usually ran about 8 or 9 and 60 or 65 on 03o and 10 and 70 on 035 when welding 1/8" the chart was cold and slowMillermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:@ farmshop -  ~ = 2 x the published Voltage & about the same WS on 1/8" for 0.030? Wow.  Ok, maybe my aforementioned beads are 'coldish'?? Will try up'n the V during the next burn it.  Mahalo!
