Well this morning i had a bit of a shock it was so bad that i had to take pictures, because i just couldn't believe a Welder would simply do poop like that and then leave it.I'm making a Lighting Gantry out of 100 x 100 x 10 RSA and you can imagine its pretty large and the welds have to be a decent fillet with good penatration, been doing fine myself until yesterday when they told me that a guy on night shift will finish off what i didn't manage to do during the day.Well take a peek and tell me if this is bog standard welding or worst You wouldn't believe how ANGRY i got this morning at 7am. I spent the next 2.5 hours grinding out every weld that bloke did and re doing it.Surely you can see its a load of Poop, why do it?? and he's a welder too, or at least he thinks he is.
Reply:I would be upset too. At least they let you grind out his ugly work. Id be more upset if they didnt let me do that.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:I would say there is now a job opening on the night shift!  is this a project that is going to subject to inspection?  I am guessing not for a boss to even allow that.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:looks like its costing them more if they would have just left it alone and let you finish it..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/

Reply:Thanks for the replies guys, as you can imagine i was really angry with this, not because i had to spend the next two and a half hours grinding out all this poop, but worried that the boss may walk pass and assume its my welding The guy is an old guy and apparently been doing welding for years I don't think so somehow, its just lazyness, its a really simple weld to do and the runs are about 8 inches long which is not hard to do, i wonder what suprises i have when i go into work this morning
Reply:I think you should have brought out the boss and had a talk about it. If the nite guy left "that" then you were also left the responsibility to CYA. That requires that the boss be informed why it took so song and what you have to deal with.Miller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few. So YES you can own too many tools.
Reply:Oh God here we go again And then theres this....He's noticed that his welding is pretty crap by now and he's attacked the work with a 9 inch Grinder???He's then gone on to weld the underneath and thats it??What a mess and a flaming Joke, Now any work like this that gets left will get put in the rework Pile, i'm not even going to put it right myself, He may as well get his finger out or clear off and let a decent welder have a job.I'm going direct to the Directors on Monday, some people have no pride in their work at all, i'm sure i could weld better with my eyes shut, my hands tied behind my back and just using my feet. Anyway weekend Starts for me now so i'll try and put it behind me until Monday
Reply:The way I see it is that you really don't have a say in who finishes what once you are gone for the day..The boss is in charge of that.So now it becomes his resposibility..You show up the next day and have to do it over on top of grinding out what was left behind..Not very cost efficient is it?Whatever..Don't get mad get even....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I'd have to agree with the Zap, it's not your concern to be a busybody tell tale dobber in etc.If the boss sees fit to let the work get done HIS WAY, who are you to stick your beak in....maybe the other guy is being paid less than you, so now the job is costing double time for every minute you add to it.Ian.
Reply:A picture is worth a thousand words. The boss must be blind. That work is just dangerous.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:If u see work on a project that is incompetent you do have a responsibility to bring this to the attention of your boss.   I would then ask. Do u want me to leave it as is or grind out the night shift guys work every morning and redo his job?   CYA.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Just curious, but why are you going back and re-doing all of his work?  Is it the visual that you don't like, or has it been proven to be weak?  (are you x-raying them?)If you are in a production shop, then this piece should pass through an inspection process before it leaves correct?  I'd let them catch it, then point the finger if they ask.  No sense making extra work for yourself for no reason if it will pass QA the way it is (was).  I work nights...so I know full well of having to clean up and finish up after the day shift.  I've learned that if they leave something bad enough...then I don't touch it.  The moment I touch it, my name goes on it and I am fully responsible.  I'm not going to take a hit on my reputation for someone else's mistake (and make them look good while I receive nothing).Miller Syncrowave 200MillerMatic 180 AutoSetHobart Airforce 500iVictor O/A (80cf)
Reply:I've witnessed millions of dollars in waste and damage due to people taking shortcuts. I am military so it means your tax dollars are going to waste. I make every effort to put a boot to the @$$es of those responsible. Some of the previous replies show a much bigger problem in our workforce. Good enough is good enough and why put forth the effort when someone else will fix it for me. China has already passed us in quantity and will soon pass us in quality if we keep it up.Nothing but credit to Gerry for takin a little pride in his work.
Reply:Every person on the floor of a factory should consider themselves as part of QC.As a matter of fact, mistakes should never even get to QC.Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Too many busy bodies taking too much time with other people's problems.Sure, QC is important.......keep your own house in order....the boss employs idiots to save money, but when you fuss with other people's messups you are not welcomed. As the man said, you are making yourself responsible for the whole job......supposing the weld zone you "refinished" had some slag inclusions.......the only guy to cop it will be you.....the evidence of prior poor work willl be lost to see........do you also go around cleaning the toilets when there are skid marks left after a heavy session by someone else?Ian.

Reply:My best advice...Get a symbol, stamp your work with fidelity. Below is one I got on advice from someone with salt but the craft was machining in the 70's.Number stamps are all the same, symbols are hand made and have flaws, like a fingerprint no two are the same.My 1970's symbol says "this is mine"... Your mate will be confused... sorry! It is not my current stamp, but still I have blurred it a bit not to be copied (some of those parts may still be out there).Nevertheless, if the hand says "what is that", you say "this is mine, that is yours", they are different, " you need to work on yours", mine is marked & the stamp is in my pocket...Good luckMatt Attached Images
