Here is some photos of my project I did for Layout and Assembly for school. I made a 5x8 utility trailer using mostly 2"x2"x3/16" angle. It was a fun and a very good learning experience. Also, I know how most of you say building a trailer is not a good "learning" project, but it is not like I was using a 110 flux core welder or something, I had quality equipment and my instructor helping me the entire time.anyway, on the the picsHobart Ironman 230 MIGHobart Handler 125 MIGEverlast Powertig 185 DV (2014 model)Collossal Tech cut 50Evolution Rage 2 Black Bull Bandsaw
Reply:clean welding area at homeThis is as far as I got. Just have to rip 2 more boards to fill in the black spots and run the wiring.Hobart Ironman 230 MIGHobart Handler 125 MIGEverlast Powertig 185 DV (2014 model)Collossal Tech cut 50Evolution Rage 2 Black Bull Bandsaw
Reply:Good job! How much money did you put in it? Was thinking of doing one someday
Reply:Around $1500 id say, but I bought axle parts from Tractor supply and had a shop paint it for $375. If I would of gotten the axle parts from a supplier im sure it would of been a lot lessHobart Ironman 230 MIGHobart Handler 125 MIGEverlast Powertig 185 DV (2014 model)Collossal Tech cut 50Evolution Rage 2 Black Bull Bandsaw
Reply:Did you build it at home and just submit the plans and cut lists for your school work?
Reply:I did most of the metal work at school, but other students needed work space for their project so when I got it tow able I took it home to do some finishing touchesI had to draw blueprints for it and a cut list for my materialsHobart Ironman 230 MIGHobart Handler 125 MIGEverlast Powertig 185 DV (2014 model)Collossal Tech cut 50Evolution Rage 2 Black Bull Bandsaw
Reply:ok, there is a big difference between building a project fully supervised by an instructor who knows what he's doing and can show you how to fix something if you mess up, and building something in your garage with the welder you bought from the box store because you thought you wanted to learn to weld. You wont get flack for doing something fully supervised. Looks good from a distance, where's the close up shot of the welds? There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:I don't know if it makes a difference to you but that loading ramp is like a parachute.  I'd look into making it a folding ramp and save lot's of gas and wear and tear on your truck.  Good job on the trailer though.

Reply:Looks good. I don't think you will have any problems with that tailgate......you used expanded metal, not checkerplate, the wind will go right through.I like that you used boards for the deck, and not just plywood.

Reply:Originally Posted by BistineauYou could have painted it yourself for the price of the paint and a brush. If your going to continue making welded projects, you need to learn how to paint anyway. Looks like you did a fine job on the design and build. Thorshammer is right, in that since you had supervision over the project to insure it's done right, a trailer can make a good first project. We just don't want someone teaching themselves how to weld, with a trailer being the learning surface. Some want to learn with a Harbor Fright 90 amp FCAW rig and think everything will be just greatIf you want your deck to last a long time, you should give it a good wood preservative treatment in a few months after it has seasoned/weathered some. Even if you used pressure treated wood, it will still rot out after a few years if left out in the elements. I'm talking about using used motor oil and diesel fuel(50/50 mix ratio) and coat all the surfaces of the wood. Wait till June or July and remove them for this so you can flip them over to get it all over. Leave it in the sun to dry and apply 3-4 coats over a day or two time, then reinstall them. They may then last as long as the rest of the trailer. Be sure to pay special attention to the end grain, it will really suck up the oil. Having the oil on the wood will keep water from penetrating the surface and prevent rot from getting started. It will dry in and not leave a slick/slippery surface.Again, good job on the build, what was your grade on it?
Reply:That is a lot of work! Excellent project! So you own a black bull band saw, what's the model?PlasmaCam CNC cutterLathe and Band SawClamps
Reply:its just the 4x6 model that is almost identical to the Harbor freight 4x6 bandsaw.Hobart Ironman 230 MIGHobart Handler 125 MIGEverlast Powertig 185 DV (2014 model)Collossal Tech cut 50Evolution Rage 2 Black Bull Bandsaw
Reply:Looks great! Nice work. Not to pile on, but I agree on the comment above about painting. $375 is pretty steep for paint. A harbor freight spray gun and a gallon of paint and primer and a couple hours woulda cost ya $75-100. Not to mention the experience for future projects.
Reply:I built the trailer for my dad and he wanted to have a local shop paint it. his idea, not mineHobart Ironman 230 MIGHobart Handler 125 MIGEverlast Powertig 185 DV (2014 model)Collossal Tech cut 50Evolution Rage 2 Black Bull Bandsaw
Reply:That probably means he paid for it right? If so, win-win! No extra work and no extra $ out of your pocket!
