My local steel supplier is jerking me around and I"ve got a huge job right now, for the most part I've just grinned and bared the gouging my "contractor" pricing has gotten me, even after I got a quote for a guy I know here for some sheets of steel, when it came time to pull the trigger I was out of time and he didn't want to wait, he went down there and walking in off the street with no account got it for two cents a pound less than I was quoted.  This was 3 days apart.  I recently fought with them about that and other prices I've gotten from people what they are paying, they knocked it down for that order that day, that was last week, beginning of this week I went in to get more steel and she made a point of saying "oh I got you in there at your new discount level so I'll have to watch it now", it was back to the old same gouging me prices.  When I go in there I'm buying full sticks, I'm not buying cut lengths unless it's something really big that I won't use a lot of.  Norfolk in Greeley supplies to this place, I've tried to setup an account with them and he said they wouldn't compete against them even though ever other welding shop in the area is setup with a dealer through them.  He told me "well we have a 1500lb minimum order" I told him that's no problem.  I figured it out I needed to order 2300 lbs that day.  Said he would get me an application never got it, never heard from him again, wouldn't return my calls. My only option is traveling, I know of one place in Rapid City I'm going to check with but I'd like to know of places in Denver to check with as well.  I need to order enough tubing that even a ten cent a pound discount would save me more money than it would cost for fuel.
Reply:I just saw that there is a Ryerson branch in Denver.http://www.ryerson.com/en/Our-Compan...Midwest/DenverUp until about March of this year, the Atlanta based one treated me well, then the prices started climbing a bit (compared to other very large distributors - still below 'retail').  But, they never minded delivering to my small shop (next day, everytime), even when I called for small (sub $1000) orders.  May or may not amount to anything, but I'd give them a call and see.Who is John Galt?

Reply:No, based out of Chicago. They have a large Atlanta branch, and dozens of delivery trucks that run the North Ga area. I was very pleased with them until the quotes ran high. I find that quotes from most of the suppliers tend to run within pennies of each other on the same order, and with as many suppliers as we have, it's real easy to swap when the prices start going out of whack. There are a ton of large steel distributors in atlanta - Ryerson, IMS, Phoenix, and many more, but the one that everybody older than me remembers is JM Tull metals. Apparently, they used to be very well known, but they merged with or were bought out by Ryerson, some time back.
