Gidday guys,Im new to this site stumbled upon it while searching for clues on Bronzecraft rods.I was out on site today and was asked to weld on a bronze sealing lip on a cone crusher. So basically bronze to mild steel with a DC welder. I had a practice on just bronze to bronze with the rods and got it fairly sussed, but when trying to weld to the mild steel gave me the biggest grief. Im thinking that its not even capable of fusing bronze and steel properly. I had to do plug welds so had verti ups and overheads as well as downhand to do. Downhand did fine cos the metal falls into the fillet, but overhead what a nightmare. Sometimes it would deposit weld other times it would just ball up and sit at bottom of plug. What my query is it actually possible and is there a proper technique?Cheers Gareth
Reply:I can only suggest reading up on various products as I have no experience in this area though I am interested in trying copper and bronze welding and brazing to other metals so will be watching the thread.  Harris seems to make a variety of products for bronzehttp://www.harrisproductsgroup.com/e...s/Welding.aspxhttp://www.harrisproductsgroup.com/e...s/Brazing.aspxyou may want to call them and see if a tech person can help you out with how to do the job if you dont get  hereWelding Supply carries a lot of the above products at discounted prices if you need a buying sourceLast edited by soutthpaw; 10-17-2012 at 11:44 PM.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:So this was using a stick welder with bronze rods? It's certainly possible to braze with bronze, either OxyAcetylene or TIG.Lincoln 175HD
Reply:yeh mate stick welding. bronze to bronze  was fine, but yeh steel to bronze was very touch n go
Reply:I don't think you can "weld" bronze to steel. Their melting points are too far apart. Bronze melts at 1870* and steel around 2600*FI had no idea they even made bronze stick welding electrodes. Are they coated with a flux? Are you sure you're not using a flux-coated rod that's meant for oxy-acetylene brazing?
Reply:It isn't welding, it's brazing. It's certainly possible though.Lincoln 175HD
Reply:for example, here's a bead of Silicon Bronze that was TIG brazed onto steel:Lincoln 175HD
Reply:Well the package and writing on the rods which had a grey/blackish flux had bronzecraft acdc written on it. Had a bronze core and flux outer. 3.2mm rods.Yeah I guess the two different melting points would explain why the filler material just falls out on overhead/verti up welding
Reply:Camper, did you ever find a website for Bronzecraft?  Do you think your electrodes could've been old or damp?If this is an on-going event where you need specialty electrodes, I've had good luck with this company:http://www.rockmountnassau.com/Of course, I realize you may not be in the States, but it's a good site for info too.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:you can  download the PDF brochure on it   http://www.burnback.com.au/uploaded/..._datasheet.pdfit is a Phosphor Bronze Rod with 7% tin.   AC or DC+  70- 110 Amps.  I see it as a CIGWELD product but don't see any USA sources.    It says it can be used for joining steel to bronze alloys.    they also recommend a couple of Silicone Bronze fillers as comparable for mig and tig...Last edited by soutthpaw; 10-18-2012 at 10:50 PM.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Yeah it was only a once off thing and I spat the dummy when it wouldn't weld but was just curious if anyone knew anything about them
Reply:I am guessing they don't work too well as seems no one else offers a similar product.  They sell Aluminum stick welding rods too but they don't work very well.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:I have used phosphor bronze stick electrodes occasionally. Not that uncommon, I think the ones I have are All-State. They do OK in an emergency but not nearly as good as MIG or TIG. Thankfully never had to use them out-of-position.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
