I recently proposed the idea of volunteering to be an in house weld instructor at my factory.  I recently moved to the quality control department so this gives me some free time to help out employees.  they are intrigued by the idea and I was wondering what classes and or certifications I could gain to help make this work out?  our general manager and ceo has asked me to come up with schooling costs and a time frame for said position.  we don't comply with any specific codes to my knowledge within the plant for weld quality as it's all aluminum processes.  Max of 3 pass.   I am thinking all that is necessary is an aws weld inspection cert.  any others that would help?  thanks in advance
Reply:I know that lincoln offers short courses for welding instructors.  I am not sure if they cover much aluminum in it.  An AWS inspector cert would give you a good knowledge of code.  The instruction is mostly on how to interpret the code and all the legal jargon in the code.  Lincoln also offers instructional materials when you take the course.  They usually are over summer time so I suspect that enrollment will be close until next summer.

Reply:Sounds like AWS D1.2 to me. And good luck with that. AWS does not sell any SWPS for D1.2. You have to make your own, and they are a pain.A better description of your processes and product would help greatly.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Originally Posted by HT2-4956I would think that one of the most important things for you to be to fill the position of "in house welding instructor" would be for you to be a highly skilled, knowledgeable and experienced welder.   Because if you don't have a good amount of hands on experience at welding yourself I really don't see how just getting a CWI would make you qualified for that position.  Don't get me wrong, a CWI cert is certainly a good thing to have but if you're not already a skilled and experienced welder I can't see how just getting a CWI would make you more "qualified" to be a "welding instructor".I believe AWS also has a "Certified Welding Instructor" certification.   And to me this would seem the more appropriate thing for you to pursue getting.   One thing about your post that confuses me is where you imply that you're not sure if your plant follows any specific codes as far as weld quality "as it's all aluminum processes".I would tend to think that some one in the QC Department would know for sure whether or not any specific codes apply to the welding being done as part of your plants manufacturing process.   Also it seems to me that you may think that following a code or procedure might not be all that important when it comes to Aluminum welding.   While it all depends on what specifically you're building, complying with a code and following approved procedures can be just as important in Aluminum welding as it is in welding other types of material.Correction:  AWS has a CWE (certified welding educator) certification.  http://www.aws.org/certification/CWE/

Reply:Just because you can weld, doesn't mean you can teach. The reverse also applies to a limited extent, just because someone is a great teacher, doesn't automatically imply they are the worlds greatest welder. The real question is do you have the ability to get the concept across well to those trying to learn?.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:I don't think there is anything you need to do class-wise. the fact that the plant has faith in you is awesome and you should be proud! I dream of a job like that so I will give you my advise that I have actually never really practiced outside of helping a guy out every once in a while.my company lacks procedure, inside shop and out, everybody welds like their last employer taught them to, some are horrible, some are good, and my bosses only requirements are "make it hold". sad.so, what I would do, alongside my Lincoln Welding Procedure Handbook, or whatever I could get hands on, is develop procedures on paper and test to those procedures. I think it would be wise to develop tests for your procedures, i.e. 6g 2" tig, 6g 8" tig root/wf fill. not sure if your purge but include that too!so then, with these goals on paper, "certify" everbody you can, and those that don't pass need to be watched and taught a little. your not instructing so much, just being the ring-leader and keeping everyone up to par! and that requires no certswhen I worked in the shop, there was a man that did just that, and nothing bad ever left the floor. he is ill and fell off his position, and since then I have seen some shotty work come out of there. good luck, and keep it up!just remember, for those that need teaching, make sure your procedure makes sense, and that you can explain it and justify all parts of it. lots of folks don't really understand the importance of beveling, pre-heat, etc, so back your procedure up with failures by those that didn't followLast edited by 92dlxman; 08-23-2014 at 11:53 PM.bosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin

Reply:Originally Posted by Jlathigeethere is only one specific cooler we make that has it's own code specification,  and it's just a Canadian certification to comply with shipping.  other than that as long as you have the experience and have passed our in house weld exams you can be welding the next day of employment.  yes I am experienced there,  and I've held positions in the weld and weld repair department, and most currently qc. I am essentially asking if there are legally any certifications needed to instruct?  I've researched and come up with no answers.  currently they have a local vocational school teacher come in to run a weld class once a year to give current employees the chance to learn.  they are looking to make that a year round thing with myself and one other employee doing the training.  Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk 2

Reply:Originally Posted by shovelonLooks like a mix of 6061 and 5052 to me. At least that is what I would spec , and dissimilar thicknesses. I think I would have your employer join AWS, and then purchase a copy of AWS D1.2. From there find the operator/ weldor qualification groove coupon test for perhaps 1/8th inch thickness. As this thickness is above 1/16th, it will qualify both fillet and groove. Then you have to draw the joint configuration in detail, write the essential parameter limits including filler, and test.D1.2 will allow radiograph examination for qualification, and if pass you assign that person an identification. My xray house is in California, but there are many that are weld test friendly.Although my description is grossly over simplified, it cuts to the chase.
