I have a hardened female spline sleeve, unknown material other than steel (a magnet sticks to it, it's originally from a chinese gokart). It's roughly 1.25" in diameter on the outside and 10" in length.  I need to make a male, keyed extension to this shaft. I'm using 1" diameter 1045 shaft.  I need to weld these two materials together to make a single shaft and I need to do this with either flux core wire or a stick. My first question is can I weld to the one end of the sleeve without affecting the "hardening" of the opposite end? If the welded end is relatively "soft" it won't have much effect on the overall project, but the splined end is essential.Since the shaft I'm using isn't particularly "hard" itself, should I worry about using a special rod/wire?Lastly (for now), again since it's not a hardened shaft, would it accomplish much by trying to re-harden the welded area? If it is not possible to weld one end of the sleeve without ruining the hardening of the spline end, how would the hardening process change with the 1045 shaft? Thanks in advance!
Reply:If it is hard at all it's probably just "Case Hardened"....That means only the exposed steel is hardened .010 or so deep...No problem.Just do it.7018 rod if you have any and no need to worry about it after......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Should i worry about what kind of rod/wire I use?  Or should my generic E71T wire work?

Reply:I see that now...I'm sure that wasn't there a moment ago.I'll go and look for that stuff and see if I can bum a stick welder off someone.

Reply:I keep trying to add it but I keep getting database errors by the time I get to that portion of my profile lolI'm in Lubbock, TX and frequent Abilene, Amarillo, Midland/Odessa, and the place between on a regular basis.
Reply:I have a Lincoln 225 AC Buzz box in Lubbock you could use, but I think you need DC for 7018 rods. Also have a Lincoln 180 mig, but I don't know if you want to go mig on that projectSent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

Reply:There you have it. Pick up some 7018 ac rods (5/32 or 1/8?)I would try Lubbock Welding Supply or  Airgas for the rod first though...better prices and fresher materials. The home depot rods sit on the shelves a long time.I do have 7014 rod on hand, but I don't think it will penetrate the same.
Reply:On a 1" - 1.5" dia shaft, I'd use 3/32 7018 rod.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Will the 225 buzz box handle that without sticking though. It may be at it's upper limit
Reply:Thanks 1blink!I actually took it to Total Engine Service to see if they could handle it, and those guys referred me to D&S machine at of E 46th since he had a lathe he could chuck it into to hold it true.  The guy at D&S took $20 this morning and had it ready when I went looking after work.  Turned the shaft down to fit the sleeve better, chucked it up, welded it, then turned the weld down to clear my bearings.  Awesome work and an unbeatable bargain.
Reply:Yeah, that's pretty awesome
Reply:225 buzzbox at its upper limit with a 3/32 7018? But you suggest a 5/32 7018 for a 1" dia shaft?Not sure about you but I run a 5/32 7018 around 160 amps dc and a 3/32 around 90 amps dc.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
