Reply:tig_21  -  Your beads look great, but . . .Welding threads always produce weld fill irregularities. You noted the parts were cut on a CNC and the "Plates are 1/8" with machined hole for stud to fit nice and tight in to prevent from pulling".A stud/threads with a pitch that large may fit nicely, but won'tpocket/seat on a plate that thin, and prevent pull. Was there any consideration at the design level to weldfrom the backside?CNCs don't care, and can change profiles in seconds, so the cost of an additional operation is negligible. The pay-off is fit for manual welding.    If the stud had been turned with a shallow square shoulder that solidly pocketed into the plate, and welded from the backside, you would not have the inherent undercut problem of welding threads. This would be just as strong and more visually pure.Opus
Reply:opus look at the last picture in the top right corner you can see one of the bolts has the threads turned off so it wil seat in the plate...is that what you are talking about? and personally i would have turned a shoulder on the bolts and plug welded them from the back side i think it would look cleaner but since my tig welds dont look as good as some i like to hide them lol

Reply:OPUS,Thanks for the reply and tips. This rod was machined to have a sleeve-like fit onto the plate. You can see from the pictures there is a rod that hasn't been welded yet and shows how it was machined. Because of this, the rod has a flat spot where the sleeve stops and so it sits flat and level with the plate. Therefore, I tack it on one side and move to the other side and do another tack while pressing down on it to make sure it hasn't pulled. I hope that makes sense....I did mention the idea of welding from the backside but based on the thickness of the plate only being 1/8" it would have just been more of a hassle IMO. Welds may look nice but in the end all these are getting powder-coated. I still won't that keep me from performing my best weld every time, even after 2,000 of them.Plates are off to the coaters now. Reply:Generally, with PEM inserts, they say not to deburr the hole.  See page 8:http://www.pemnet.com/fastening_products/pdf/cldata.pdfI see chamfers on the holes in the first two pics.

Reply:Ya know it's interesting hearing everyone talk about this project. I don't know what it holds, exactly what it goes on, or what exactly the engineer was thinking....All I do know if what they wanted and that I get paid for it....It is kinda funny how small the press in PEM's are and how big the rod is!As far as the chamfer goes I made sure not too deburr the holes too much but so far out of the 1000 I pressed in none have come out. I guess the next batch i'll make sure to keep note of that. Thanks for lookingMiller Dynasty 200Millermatic 211Instagram?.... find me @ WELD_MEDIC
