I needed a little table to practice mig at home and didn't want to spend any money. I made it from railroad plates and some scrap pipe. The welds on the bottom of the table top are 6010 and the ones on the top side are mig. I'm hoping the 6010 penetrated enough to hold it all together. The mig welds were more cosmetic qnd for practice. It ain't pretty but it was almost free and it will do the job.
Reply:dam, you can probably sell that for big bucks as art...Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:Good zero capitol project. I like the quilted look! And you've got bench dog hole prebuilt-in!! Whoot! And yeah, in the right shop, maybe with more thoughtful legs, you got a $600-1200 table.200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:My nephew drug those plates out of a creek. They were buried in mud and yuck.  They smelled like crap (literally) when I was welding and grinding on them. It was a very dirty job to say the leastProps to lincoln 6011 rods! They will indeed burn through anything!
Reply:I used to have a Dr named Yarbrough.....

Reply:Thanks for the nice replies guys. Sorry the pic disappeared.  I had a problem with photobucket and lost my pics. No big deal tho, none of them were important. I think later on I may put some better legs on it! I'm kinda thinking of building one a little nicer too to sell as folk art....
Reply:Upgraded the junk table with a junk hammer and a pole for practicing overhead. The hammer is made from a screw from a larg vise that broke and a wristpin from a cat engine. Oh and the hammer holder is a bend test coupon from my 3g unlimited stick test and the bracing is old emt conduit. Good junk!
Reply:I could get tons of those plates in WAY better condition here at the RR yard. We catch Snowbirds stealing them all the time. They use them in the gutter/curb so they can drive their RV's over the curb into their side yards. No matter how many times you tell them, they keep stealing them. I think Canadians must have some kind of mental disorder that develops when they come to the desert.PS. Thanks for the idea! Now I can make a bunch of them here and sell them! hahahaLincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:Perfect table. Looks great from here. I've got one I leave outside that is oogly as the dickens, eternally unfinished and made solely from scraps. I make sure nothing worth a whole lot goes into it, add little tid-bits as I get them or feel in the mood."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:I have never seen ribbed ones. Now I gotta go scrappin' and look. Get this, the RR just tore down their ONLY locomotive shop in the area. The reason? So they don't have to pay taxes on the building. It is considered an improvement and they tax it as such. This after last year when they replaced all the glass that the kids through rocks through, then they put expanded sheet metal and welded it up to keep it there. Money management, right? Sheeesh. The shop was cool. It had tracks that rolled right up into the shop, there was a mechanic's pit under the stalls. I mean, just a cool thing that has always been there. It was steel framed and tin walled. Reply:That's sux but hey that's politics for ya.I'd load up on all the free steel you can get! A man could make money on little projects if he paid attention to detail.
