Hi all I was given a brand new Ryobiu band saw:   http://www.ryobitools.com/powertools/tool/bs902/Im looking to cut metal with it. I got a metal blade but Im concerned about the speed, as there is no speed control on it. Is this going to be a problem? Help!ThanksDustinLast edited by dnm; 01-08-2007 at 03:42 PM.
Reply:3000fpm is bookin...  Need to find a way to slow it down, perhaps a variable speed controller for like a router maybe...  Wire it in with the on switch.  hmm..Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.
Reply:I figured as much, how can I slow it down without damaging it?
Reply:If you look at the manual under operation you'll see that is states the saw is designed for wood only...... pg 14 I thinkhttp://oneworld1.inetu.net/manuals/i...&search_mode=f_________________Chris
Reply:crap, thats what I figured.
Reply:So what can I use to cut up sheet metal, maybe 1/4 plate and round bar?
Reply:The HF porta band would be the cheapest option.  The 4 x 6 bandsaw would be a better choice.DennisThermal Arc 185-TSWMillermatic Challenger 172VictorO/AAtlas Craftsman 12 by 24 LatheEsab PCM-875Wholesalem Tool Mill-Drill
Reply:Im thinking Im just gonna return it for a chop saw
Reply:If it is direct drive, and not pulley driven, your screwed.  Maybe a speed controller, but you'd have to check the amp ratings.I bought a 14" Taiwan type floor model band saw for woodworking.  When I needed to do some metal, I replaced the large pulley with the largest one I could get on it which slowed it down sufficiently to not burn up my metal cutting blades if I let the blade do the work and don't rush it.It doesn't really effect the wood cutting either, so I just leave it on and cut a little bit slower. When I cut wood, I usually am using it for cutting small logs (called resawing) into boards with a 3/4" blade.  I welded up and machined a 6" throat extension piece so I can get up to an 18" diameter log through it.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
