I'm a newb looking to make mods and things for my jeep and one of the first project areas I'm focused on are things that attach to the door hinges when the doors are off.  Hoping you guys can provide some advice to get me in the right direction before I buy the wrong materials.  The mods I'll be making are things like foot pegs (rest your foot), mirrors attached, half doors, door hangers for the walls, etc..  The hinge on the jeep is a tube, and the door has pins that slide in to attach.    I believe the male hinge pin is .415 in size.  Questions:.415 doesn't seem to be common at metal supply stores.  I see 3/8 (.375) rod and 7/16's (.4375) which is under/over by a decent margin.  I don't have a mill.   Is there something special I can look for to find this?  It doesn't have to be airplane precision, but I don't want a lot of play. What material should I use?   I'm focused on steel.  But with rod, I see a lot of alloys, hot, cold, hardened, stainless, and variants.  I want this to be really strong, but I'm new and I don't know if there are complications with welding mild common steel to these variants.
Reply:10 millimeter? This place had metric round bar in many materials.  Here's chrome moly.  They have a 10.5 mm size which would be closer.http://metric-steel.spahrmetric.com/...r-42crmo4-4140Another source:  http://www.metricmetal.com/products/round.htmYou could get rod in 1018 steel from them, which should be readily weldable.  Splurge and get TGP - turned, ground, polished - if they do they with 1018.Last edited by Oldendum; 09-04-2014 at 11:57 AM."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:Metric!  Should have thought of that.  Great idea.  Yea, the 10 is a lot closer and 10.5 which both places you mention have is .413 in size, so it might be exactly the size that Jeep is using.  Thanks so much.  I sent them a rfq.  Any concern with strength for this being normal mild steel for this type of application?  Although, what the pin would be welded to is mild steel, so maybe it's weakest link is the problem anyways.
