I have a Lincoln 175 plus that I want to do some welding outdoors. Rather than use gas thought I would try flux core but I have never used it as all my work has been inside the shop. Since I don't know much about it thought I might get some advise. My welding supplier has moved and the local NAPA has the supplies. (no help there) they have a hard time with auto parts. Most of the welds will be 1 inch square tubing .080 wall. and similar angle iron. I use .030 and .025 wire solid wire now. I assume I will need to change the nozzles as well.So any advise will be welcomed.
Reply:Just go up a size from what you would be running solid. No need to change the nozzle. They do make FCAW nozzles but not required. I would find an old nozzle to use as it will get boogered up a bit.

Reply:There's alot of smoke and dust with FCAW as well. An N95 mask or better, a good complement of wire brushes/wheels, somethin to scrape the toes, maybe some anti-spatter spray and I keep a rag in my back pocket to wipe the dust off my hood periodically. It's also alot harder to see the puddle.
Reply:I should also mention the FCAW nozzles will keep crap out of your diffuser. Just be ready to clean it out if you don't use one.
Reply:For tubing that thin I would recommend .030 flux core. Home Despot has NR-211 in that size.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:I like the flux .30, seems to work well for me. You will have to wipe off your hood after awhile.. tends to build up alittle. Here are a couple of welds ive done this week on a pipe bender, after using a cup brush to clean it off. its not as good looking as some, but gets the job done for me.
