4047 filler on 5356 sheet

looking at making a live tank for my boat and have some 5356 sheet and 4047 filler spare would there be any problem using the 4047 filler on the 5356 sheet?thanks

Reply:No, the 4047 wouldn't be a good choice with the 5356.  The 4047 uses silicon as an alloying ingredient, while the 5356 has magnesium.  You're going to have a really inconsistent and probably crack sensitive mixture if you welded one with the other.  Pick up some 5356 filler instead.

Reply:I use 4043 pretty much most of the time.....Depending on what the project calls for stress wise you can make that decision when designing it......As we all know 5356 is harder and stronger than 4043 and you can have some cracking issues if applied with too much heat ( my experience) that being said draw your own conclusions.  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:????5356 aluminum is a common welding filler.But I don't see it listed as a plate alloy.  The 'common' 5xxx plate is 5052.  Alcoa doesn't list a 5356 plate, just references 5356 as a welding filler.  They do list 5052 sheet and plate.For welding 5052 to 5052, the recommended filler is 5356.  Although it can be welded with 4043 as well.  The best laid schemes ...
