Started a new job welding fract tanks they are having me weld the bottom of the tanks but they want me to take another test with 7024 bevel both sides >< and get full pen with 7024 on  3/16 metal 7024 and 7024 only.. I've never used jet rod till the other day and couldn't penatrate all the way through and when I'd weld the other side I'd get holes and slag but my heat was 140.. so how big of a gap should I do how big of a chamfer and what amperage ??
Reply:I use a lot of 5/32 jet, I prefer DCEP polarity, I would guess around 150 to 160 amps. The trick is to keep the slag out of the puddle, it takes a little practice with jet since there is so much slag and iron powder flowing. Rod angle and arc length is the key to keeping the slag out of the puddle. I nearly always start at 90 degree rod angle and a long arc, as I weld and everything gets hotter I decrease arc length to control the puddle and cool things down, and I often end up dragging the rod angle as I go. Pay attention to the slag and practice with different heat settings and you will get it. Just keep in mind that as the steel gets hotter it will act differently. Jet rod is kinda different but just stay with it and once you make friends with it you'll have a friend for life. Some of the best lookin welds I have made in the last two decades were made with jet. I love it.The worst thing I can think of happening is if everything I ever welded instantly became UNWELDED
