Need some help. I know there are various tools avilable to cope tubing but I'm just getting started in TIG welding of chrome-moly tubing for practice. Eventually , I'll either make something or buy a rig. In the meantime, is there a simple set-up to cope 1.00 OD X .035 wall and 1.250 X .035 wall that you seasoned fabricators can suggest. I 'd appreciate your input.

Reply:Do you mean a 90 degree die grinder or a body grinder? Or something else altogether? I've been in Tool & Die for 25 plus years so I've got a pretty fair hand with a grinder. I just thought someone had a quick, down and dirty method. Thanks, Patriot!

Reply:A chop saw, or horizontal band saw works good too. Set it on 45 deg., cut the first side, flip it, line it up with a square, cut the other side. ---john
Reply:Thanks John for jogging my memory (chop saw). I knew I had done something with tubing many years ago but the cobwebs clogged my cognition. As my son would say, "This forum is the S***!" Thanks again.

Reply:Lorenzo one of the guys I worked with had one and worked pretty good!
Reply:You're right Jonnie Fraz that was capable of producing a great fit-up. I went to their website, a bit pricey for me at the moment but I sure appreciate you sharing the info.Lorenzo, that rig might be the ticket. Do you remember what sort of bearing type was used for the extension between the chuck and the hole saw? I know some of them have needle bearings but the one from H.F may have a bronze sleeve. Thanks!
Reply:I have the harbor freight tube notcher mentioned above. Works great and used it allot. The one thing I would mention is to get good hole saws not cheap ones. Attached ImagesMiller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:What about a appropriately sized endmill on a lathe? Fab a way to hold the tubing and go for it.I believe the harbor frieght have bronze sleeve bearing. Bearing upgade is a common mod. to those tool.

Reply:hole saws way cheeper than end mills !
Reply:FlatlinerThere are some theads on this forum describing simply using a bandsaw (any saw will do) to make a cope cut. With some experimentation you can get some really close fit. It works well after you figure it out. For what you are doing (practicing), I would probably spend time doing it manually, first. hole saws way cheeper than end mills !
Reply:maybe he can't take the project to work !
Reply:heh, sounds like he's setting up something simple for home (end mill machines are very expensive). Hole saws the way to go. I got the HF unit, had to adjust (shim) center, but it works well. I hooked mine up to my drill press, thats another story...Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.

Reply:Well, for budgetary reasons I ordered the H.F. notcher/jig yesterday. I talked to a guy at the local Miller dealer who has one and he said for what I'm doing (practice), welding coped chrome-moly tubing it would work well. I'll see when it arrives. If I can't make it work or improve it, I'll never call myself a toolmaker again. Thanks to everybody who took the time to contribute...."SPARK ON you crazy DIAMONDS!"Flatliner
