I had some trouble today with (ns) and (fs) on my drawing. On the drawing the part number is shown and next to it was (ns). It was a top view and when looking at the drawing the (ns) was closest to me. So does this mean when fabricating that everything is reversed?
Reply:Its near side and far side. I dont think its reversed. I could be wrong.Last edited by Insaneride; 09-12-2014 at 08:08 PM.
Reply:If I remember correctly, the near side is the side shown in the view. The far side is the side opposite the side shown in the view. I've seen it used to indicate an area on the part to mark a part number, but the marking is to be done on the opposite side of the part (which is not shown on the drawing). Another typical use is to call out installed fasteners like self-clinching nuts and indicate which side of the part the fastener is inserted from.

Reply:Yes, I don't have any problems reading welding symbols. As far as arrow side and other side, fillet or groove welds, all of that good stuff that comes on a welding symbol I haven't run into any problems at my new job. But this (ns) and (fs) were NOT on a welding symbol, although welding symbols were also showed in the drawing. The arrow pointing to the part which had the (fs) on it was pointing to the part which for example was named "Part 1 (fs)".
Reply:I know what you mean. Welding symbols are simple to read. It sounds more like you are dealing with prints. What we used to call "blue prints" from the color. Fabrication prints are like the prints a machinist,or builder uses. The view that you are seeing is the near side, or front. The back side, which you don't see is the far side, or reverse.
Reply:Next lesson is as shown and opp hand, that is two pieces mirror image .Lots of bridge work is this way draw 1/4 of the job and it is done!
