Was DC TIG welding today, it seemed like my Dynasty 200DX was running a bit cold. I had my amperage set for 75 amps. I looked up at the welder while my foot was to the floor and it was showing 36amps. Shouldn't the machine be putting out 75 amps if I've got the pedal all the way down in that case? If it matters 1/16 lanth tung, welder connected to 240V single phase 50 amp circuit.
Reply:Check all connections, especially ground and the foot pedal connector (remove and re-install)GlenMiller Dynasty 200DX - Millermatic 350P - Hypertherm Powermax 45Want to sell!! - Hobart Handler 150
Reply:Were you in pulse mode? Are you using the Miller foot control with the belt drive? If it jumped a tooth or 2 it will do as you describe. Pop the bottom plate off and see if it is floppy. Put a drip of oil or a smudge of grease on the plastic slot where the potentiometer shaft seats. Pull the spring out a bit and reseat the belt and see it that fixes it. After a while it may be worth a new belt too. If those don't work, send it in maybe?Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:So no, it's not supposed to do that. lol. Ok, no I wasn't in a pulse mode. The food pedal isn't a Miller, it's a metal pedal that I don't recall the make currently. I'll double check all my connections tomorrow. Could I throw a meter on the pedal and test it? Wouldn't it be just no resistance between two pins when floored and full resistance when not pressed?

Reply:That's it, if you happen to recall Shovelton, I had asked about TIG machines a few years back for thin metal TIGing. You were of profound help way back then on that thread. Then I found this Dynasty 200DX used with very low hours. And that SCC pedal is what the seller gave to me. It's worked fine till now.

Reply:Unless it was a connection issue it wasn't the foot pedal. I ran out to the shop and pulled the foot pedal. I checked the pot from the terminal pins in the connector and it's functioning as it should using a multimeter. I went ahead and pulled the pedal apart and checked the internals, cleaned a TINY amount of dust out of it and replaced a contact pad that came off the bottom of the pedal. Tomorrow I'll check my other connections and retest. I do appreciate the tips on things to look at and check for. I've been just running my ground clamp to my table, tomorrow I'll clamp straight to the test plate. I'll also try different set amperages to see if it just is running out of power at some point. I'm really hoping it's something simple as the horror stories of repair costs on inverter machines has me scared.
Reply:Hope you find the problem. Usually they just go pop. It sounds like something simple.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Did you try it in lift arc mode or try to change the amp control to PANEL and see if it hits the dialed in amps?TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:I got it working. It apparently was something in the pedal connection. It was on tight and hasn't moved in years. But taking it off, checking it, cleaning a TINY amount of dust out of it, and putting it back together has it giving me 74 AMPS when floored with the machine set for 75. That's close enough for me. I checked other power levels and got nearly identical results of +/- 1 amp and full variable control. Thank you all for the advice and things to look at. I'm just a simple gunsmith, TIG welding is still something I'm more building into my business than something I do even weekly.
Reply:Cool! I am going to make a note of your experience.Speaking of gunsmithing, I do weld repairs for a local engraver. Reply:Heh, I know of him. He used to be or still is the factory engraver for SKB shotguns. I've seen photos of his work and worked on one of the guns he's engraved. Nice work. I'm friends with a few Firearms Engravers Guild of America members so I've seen some nice engraving. A good metal scratcher is always a handy person to know. Just like someone good enough to TIG on the outside of a firearm is a good person to know.
