This weeks project is adding side boards to a pair of shiny new haul truck bodies. Fitting each board takes about two hours, they "may require field trimming" according to the manufacture, they all arrived with a curve in them so they had to be persuaded into place with a 3 ton come-a-long and 20 pound sledge. Welded with .045 lincoln outershield and 1/8 7018

Reply:wait, I am a dummy. Why didn't the manufacturer MAKE it with sideboards? Why didn't the customer order the bed with sideboards? Your work is cool. Dream job for me. Reply:the fish plates you used is that hardox or a AR plate? the truck looks like a cat 777?
Reply:Great example of why I love suitcase feeders. They're so much more, "mobile". Nice work. You get all the fun jobs!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:I work at  a one of the biggest Komatsu dealerships in the northeast. You can't actually order the truck from komatsu with sideboards so we had to order, fit and weld them. We installed them in order to raise the capacity of the truck from 35 tons to 45 tons. The fish plates are made from regular old hot rolled steel 3/4" thick, sales manager didn't want to spend the money for any AR plate or strips on the sides,so in 6 months I'll probably have pictures of me carbon arcing the plates off. The suitcase wire feeder has been critical on this job I'm almost 3 times faster than the other welder using SMAW, it's portability is going to be key as the next set of plates has to be welded in while the body is on the truck.
Reply:Gawd it'd be nice to be able to run Outershield.Outside without any way to cut the wind it's a no-go though  I'm stuck with Innershield.  It's slow, and messy.  You simply can't run the wire fast enough to outperform stick..035 Innershield NR-211 can run at about 16v, 100-110ipm max, and it's a slow go  Push it any higher, and you get real bad porosity issues. Stepping up to a larger dia wire doesn't really do much better.  Max I can really run is .045 with my power supply (Ranger GXT), could maybe go up one dia more, but I'd be stuck somewhere in the mid range for .068. Plus the stuff isn't Charpy rated, or seismic rated.  Brittle stuff not really suitable for anything running on the road."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:True enough, it's not a haul truck without side boards on it. I don't even think the 960 haulpacks come with them. Nice job,Matt
Reply:Great job!  The welds are strong and clean. That will be a super haul truck. Well done!
