Folks,I'm a hobbyist with a Victor oxyacetylene rig. Often, when cutting even 3/16" steel, the molten steel reforms behind the cut; I have to go back and cut it again. It seems to me the steel should just drop out of the cut. This happens even when cutting with the steel parallel to the floor.Any insight? Thanks,Jack

Reply:How clean is the inside of the cutting hole on the tip? One little piece of slag stuck on the edge of the hole will make for poor cut quality. Reply:You should get a copy of the cutting tip chart that will have tip #, cutting thickness range , oxy setting and acetylene settings. Then its up to you to keep the tip clean and practice on your cutting speed.
Reply:Thanks, folks.I'm running a #0 tip and set both gasses to about 5 PSI. I'll try going faster and see if that helps.Jack

Reply:Jack You need to read thru this thread and look at some of the videos Irish Fixit did on OA cutting.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=63275.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Pointing your torch in the direction of travel helps a lot too, especially on thin metal.
Reply:I read your post and a few replies so if I repeat someone else answer I'm sorry......When you select a cutting tip it has a min. max. suggestion along with it......Too small or too large a tip will create an issue...also when you adjust the flame I turn the Acet.on more than needed to keep the soot down, adjust it till the black soot just stops and open the OXY till the feather just goes away and you have nice blue cones....Set pressures to torch manuf specs....... Reply:While tip size has a lot to do with gas consumption, and available heat, you can cut thin stuff with a large tip. You just have to put a steep angle on the torch, blowing the slag ahead of the cut, and really, I MEAN REALLY, scoot.Thin stuff is all about speed without losing your cut.
