A friend has a Powerboss pressure washer pump that is cracked. Anyone have any idea what alloy metal they're typically made of and whether they can be repaired using Tig?Thanks in advanceMiller Bobcat 250Syncrowave 200Millermatic 252Spoolmatic 30ASpectrum 625 X-TremeMaxstar 150SVictor O/A torchesDewalt angle grindersWelded on/off for over 40 years.
Reply:You could contact power boss and find out, or you could use the ole file test to determine its origins! Most that I have ever seen have been cast alluminum or cast steel but normally some sort of cast.Got a pic of the pump?Real welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!
Reply:I'll see if I can get a picture tomorrow. The crack is hairline, and can't see it unless you know where to look. Water sprays out of the crack where the pump connects to the pressurized hose. I bet the fella didn't winterize it.Miller Bobcat 250Syncrowave 200Millermatic 252Spoolmatic 30ASpectrum 625 X-TremeMaxstar 150SVictor O/A torchesDewalt angle grindersWelded on/off for over 40 years.

Reply:Found out it's some kind of cast aluminum. Used 4043 with Tig, and found the porosity in the weld would leak the high pressure water. I'm sure there's someone out there who's had better luck than I have with this kind of repair. Gave up on it, and told him to buy a new pump, and winterize it so it doesn't freeze up and crack again.Miller Bobcat 250Syncrowave 200Millermatic 252Spoolmatic 30ASpectrum 625 X-TremeMaxstar 150SVictor O/A torchesDewalt angle grindersWelded on/off for over 40 years.

Reply:I would jb weld it. Less headache and less of a chance of leaks.
Reply:This is s welding site. JB weld has it's place and it is not here. I have welded castings before and a lot of prep is the key. Grind out the crack and fill it in(high level here). However, as stated a new pump can be had cheaper than I would waste my time grinding it out and welding it.Have you ever tried to weld something that has been JB welded. It is not fun, takes more time to remove that crap.www.tjsperformance.comDynasty 300 DXHTP 240HTP Microcut 380Hyperthem 85JD2 Hyd Bender and HF Hyd Ring Roller all in one =(Frankenbender)Bpt.
