Can you upgrade your invertig 221 to dualvoltage? Other Q's too.

Hey everyone!  So im still needing my first welder after diving full bore into this fun hobby and hopefully eventually career. Taking a night class a couple days a week and were using dynasty 350's and im having a lot of fun stick welding and tig welding.    I have a few questions hopefully some of u can help me out with: I was originally set on saving for a dynasty 200dx but iv got to thinking about getting a htp invertig 221 instead. For starters $ is a big factor, especially since i see lots of equipment in my future (engine drive, plasma as i see me working mostly with stainless and aluminum, oxyacetylene and on and on). I really wanted a dual voltage tig as i hopefully see myself doing site work for customers but ive come to wonder if ill really need it as much as i thought id might. Considering i have plans for a engine drive, i can just plug the htp into that when doing site work right?? My main question is if i go htp, is there any way to upgrade the 221 to dualvoltage at a later date as htp offers the 221 in dual voltage as a option anyway? Replace a circuit board? Rewire a couple things? I wonder if the cost of doing the upgrade would even make sense? The reason why im asking this is it would be nice if in the future i regret not going dual voltage , i can just upgrade my equipment. I plan to call them and ask them monday if i cant find a answer here. A couple other Q's if u guys dont mind helping me decide: I plan on mainly doing aluminum and SS welding and the site work i might try to get into is construction equip. and aluminum dump truck bodies. Im not sure how thick those dump bodies are, but will the extra 20 amps of the htp really help me out with this stuff, or will it make not much more of a difference? Like i said: i love aluminum! So anyone know exactly the pulse range of the htp in ac? Would i be limited in anyway by the invertig 221 over choosing the 200dx on aluminum jobs thick and thin? I also plan on a lot of stick welding. Any limitations with the 221 on smaw? Hows 6010?  Stick welding performance is really important to me. Thanks so much to anyone who is kind enough to help me out with all these questions ive thrown out at u guys!
Reply:I doubt it would be a cost effective upgrade.  If you think you would need to do mobile work, look at the 110v capacity and buy up front if it suits you.
Reply:You can not upgrade to dual voltage option. It stick welds, but not very well. no dig or hot start functions. I don't think it will do 6010 very well at all. Pulse on DC is 999, pulse on ac is 10 (i think it was 10)20 amps is 10%. I'd say it could make a difference depending on what you are doing. There are times I wish i had a few extra amps over the 200 I have, especially when doing an intercooler or something like that.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Yea, not feasible at all, as it is all intertwined in there.  If you can recover the extra $500 for the DV option from your welding services I say go for it.  As for plugging it in to an engine drive generator, it is generally recommended that the THD% be very low in order for the machine to not get damaged due to it being digital/inverter.  Owner of HTP said he recommends Honda or Generac XP series, which have  8kW @ <5% THD will work as well. 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! Reply:Okay. So far in my class I've not used dig or hot start with stick. How does your Longevity stick weld? I've heard that the open circuit voltage must be high to weld 6010 well and that the dynasty 200 dx is like 80volts (am I getting that right?). I'm not even sure how or why that effects anything, especially 6010.
Reply:Haven't tried it with the other welders I have. I don't stick weld anything. Just if I want to practice a little but I don't like stick welding. So I avoid it.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer

Reply:Ya all bets are off if I'm going to have something to be desired with stick on the invertig 221. I plan on using this machine 50% with stick. Looks like its back to the Dynasty 200dx.
Reply:You can buy a good dual voltage stick welder and 221 for the price of the dynasty.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
