I was welding Al. last night.  My butt welds came out nice but my fillet weld look like crap.  I did not like the look so I filed them down and re-weld.  Is there a grinder that I can use for Al?
Reply:There are grinding wheels specifically tailored for aluminum. Your LWS will have them.
Reply:Yes, like Sandy said, there are grinding wheels specifically designed for aluminum, the binding agent will release at a lower temp, thus reducing the "loading-up" you will experience in the wheel.  In the old days, they would add wax into the mix, today, they have specific bindings that prevent the loading  . . .
Reply:I use 24 grit flap discs, and wax.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Rex Cut Rules!Brown grinding discs, they look just like a regular one, except they work on aluminum, and dont load up.If your welding supply place doesnt carry em, you can get em from Rex Cut.http://www.rexcut.com/home.asp
Reply:thanks, for all your replies.  I'm off to the lws.
Reply:Die grinder with carbide burrsDon't talk about it, Just do it!
Reply:we use these green wheels from kimball-midwest.They have spaces in them to keep them from clogging up.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:Carbide burrs are slow but clean leaving no dust/residue.  Commercial operations use a 30+ carbide tooth 4 inch wheel on a small angle grinder.  It is a very dangerous tool but fast and clean.
