the first trick i used was, i held the handle of the mig torch in my right hand and used my left hand like you would hold a pool cue  your fingers are the base and stick out your thumb and rest the front of the torch before the curve to maintain the right distance from the steel do any one eyed people want to share your secrets with us
Reply:i think i got this under the wrong heading please move to welding questions place on the forun
Reply:Blimey, Welding with just one eye! I'd be extra careful, you'll want to keep that one for as long as you can
Reply:I was helping a one-eyed adult upgrade his skills, so I closed the same eye as his bad one to see what it looked like when I was welding with him.It wasn't much different, but I did have to move my head over a little to see better.Mostly it was still the same advice - watch the puddle.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:i am very care full and always where hood or a full face shield it would be too easy to just give up  you have to have a reason to get out of bed i love to build thingsrepair things i  am not going to give up
Reply:Depth perception was a real problem. Just keep fighting through. You'll teach yourself new tricks to adapt.http://www.facebook.com/LockhartMetalArthttp://www.facebook.com/pages/Grumpy...44306259043484

Reply:i have, just trying to pass on how to weld with 1 eye for the guy that closes 1 eye to see if he could try warring an eye patch for 30 min before makes a differance1. look at the object it gets bigger as it gets closer do have any morethis is for the next person that looses an eye
Reply:I put my right eye out at 12-years of age. Started welding at 14-years of age. Started welding professionally at 17-years of age. Only time it ever bothered me is trying to get my head in a real tight spot. That forced me to learn how to weld left handed. I can only think of one or two times in my life where I couldn't see to make a weld. I just asked my partner to make that weld for me.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Yup I'm blind in one eye been this way since I was born.....I started welding two years ago and now work at a chemical plant as a welder so really no biggie just practice
Reply:at the age of 42 your brain is hardwired to having 2 eyes loose one eye at a young age you grow up and you learn that way that is what the docs say thank god that the eye patch buiness is never going to thrive exect on hallaween
Reply:Yea true lol idk no just more practice I say
Reply:I lost my right eye when I was 9. I can't think of any tips. Just don't lose the other one!  I keep lenses to a minimum, no flip up or magnifiers, just an outer protective lens and an inner one. It seems like I see two puddles otherwise. I'm not sure if it's a one eyed thing or not.
Reply:I lost sight in my right eye when I was about 9 years old which at a young age made it easier to adapt to different things. I have minor issues with depth perception and perifical vision in some areas. Probably the biggest setback is not being able to watch a 3-D movie.
Reply:you know tricks to you naturialy learned just going through life think about what you did to compensatepeople don't realise how much you have to turn your head on the blind side makes it hard to drive with a stiff neck you turn your sholders i  am a hobby welder i can take my time making my setup right i am sure there is a lot of people in the trade that loose an eye at all ages
Reply:Yeah,I never missed my eye until they came out with 3D movies. Otherwise it has not really been a handicap. I have 4 firefighters on my department with one eye. Again, not a problem. , even code 3 driving heavy trucks.
Reply:I am shocked to see how many of you are half blind! Especially you CEP! Coincidently I got wacked in the eye with a stick this afternoon and got a welt on my eye lid, thought I was in trouble for a moment.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:Just remember in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king.
Reply:this is a true statement but there is no land of the blind just the real world i commend all the people for what they could acommplish with i eye but it makes a big differance in the age it happened to you there is also a problem looking for work with a eye patch on the people that can hide there being blind (an eye that looks normal) its easier to find a job epeshaly when driving a forklift is one of your better things you could do

Reply:after my eye injury my eyes were always tired my right eye had to become my doment eye a lot more work than its ever done beforeand the impact of never being able to return to your profession again it was a ruff 6 months to get close to felling normal again have you ever felt like you were going to through up  for 2 months strait wile awake
Reply:I have 4 firefighters with one eye, all driving code 3, no wrecks.  It's really not a handicap once your used to it, except 3D movies.  I shoot very accurately, but I do shoot left eye, right handed, which means I lean over the rifle.  Some stocks don't work. My eyes ended up different colors too, DMV took hours to figure out what to put on my liscence.  Ones blue, ones brown, so I finally told them to put hazel and they did……..got to love DMV.

Reply:How did you lose your eye?
Reply:go to bottom of forum home page choise other toppics and i have my hole story posted
Reply:There are some depth perception things I never got back.  I won't drive a forklift if precision is needed. Forget baseball and 3D movies. Although i do pretty good with a backhoe. But like your dr said, people who lose it at an early age adapt fast.
Reply:i know to get my set up  where you have a flat view and watch the distance closefinding something like a wire up in the air that you are going to solider, you take swings at it till you hit it and see it move that would be hard to do with a piece of overhead you stick weldingi ducked when an object came at me seeing my only 3 d movie my wife and kids LOL  in the theater it was not a funny part of the movie i learned that you can't catch when my son tossed a macey d burger at me he said i didn't come close
Reply:More practice make easy to weld with 1 eye
Reply:Never give up!! I went through welding school at somewhere around 53 years old. The cataracts in my right eye were bad enough that I had no depth perception. That made it real hard to judge where I was at. On stick I would just barely bump the stick against the base material. That wouldn't be good for a code weld-but I made welds that passed the bend test. On mig, I would just try to listen to the sound to judge my stick-out! Tig was a disaster! Always goobered the tungsten! On the good side! Got a job with good insurance. Got the cataract removed off my right eye. Can see good now. Going to the left eye this year. Never give up! Just keep on doing what your want to do!
