Hello everyone, I work in a hardwood lumber mill and make general repairs which often times requires welding. I've taken a class, and have put a decent amount SMAW time in the last year or so. The sawmill isn't the cleanest environment, and so often times I run a 6010 for a root pass, grind, and then run a 7018 on top. Everything I've read says that 6010/6011 are rods that you manipulate with a whipping or circular motion, which I have become fairly decent at now. The reason for the rod manipulation, as far as I can gather, is to create more filler metal in the joint. My question is, if I'm going to add on another pass or two with 7018, which will certainly give a good fill, then do I really need to whip/circle with the 6010. I've dragged plenty of 6010 rods in practice and have had no problems, they seem to dig fine, just not much a fill. Does the manipulation of the 6010 rod for the root pass make the weld stronger after all is said and done? I've read that you might have problems with the rod sticking if you just drag a 6010, but I have not had that problem yet.
Reply:if you are doing a compound bevel without a backer you want that 6010 to punch through with its violent arc and add reinforcement to the backside. Dragging 6010s will not fill like whipping a 6010 will. You whip to sop the dig and let the puddle cool for the fill. It is possible to drag 6010 but its hard to keep it under control. We have these grey 6010's that arent as violent and tend to work better with dragging than the brick red 6010's. I guess its all about your application, but i would say if you dont have a backer deff stick with the 6010 rootspeedway series 125 flux core welder

Reply:you can whip it or drag it, the tensile strength doesn't change.

Reply:when I was in Wyoming welding on the pipeline prefab we only whipped the hot pass, after that they turn the heat down and drag it cause it fills up faster. We didn't whip any fillers or caps, maybe just a little dead on the bottom.We welded some 30 inch 1.0 wall for pig launchers, I hated those 3/16th 8010, too much smoke and fire.Last edited by TimmyTIG; 01-22-2013 at 06:03 AM.

Reply:pshaw, that ain't nothin, at the power plant in Boyce, La. we did some 24 inch tube headers that were 2.5 inches thick. TIG root, 7018 outMy welding partner wanted to show me how fast he was and started his first filler with 5/32, he put a slag line about a foot and a half long way down deep
Reply:here's you a pic of a tube header at the Nebraska City power plant, I didn't weld on this but did a few welds on the smaller one to the right of ithere's my welding partner on that job waiting for our 24" downcomer weld to heat up
