Just for fun I downloaded the manual for the Miller Big Blue AirPak and in the compressor section it gives the air requirements for chainsaws. Never heard of the beasts. Can anyone tell us about them?A man who can't weld is as poorly educated as a woman who can't sew
Reply:I had one at the asphalt plant on Ft. Lewis Wa. Olive drab, of course. It was listed as a part of the plant's standard equipment. Darn thing was about four feet long. Had a handle at the tip for two-man operation.Never fired the thing up in the 18 months I was there.
Reply:They may also have application underwater. The problem with air powered tools is the energy loss in their use. It would be interesting to know what the required compressor horsepower is for such a saw.Dave
Reply:It could be an EE application (explosion proof). I worked on a Bobcat that had a 3 phase electric motor and a cord reel instead of internal combustion because it was in a flour mill. I have seen many hydraulic chain saws.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:We have an air powered chainsaw. We use it to cut off wood piling that can't be pulled underwater. Its got a 48" bar on it and requires 2 divers to operate it. I think it takes around 50 CFM of air to run right.
Reply:Underwater was my first thought. Or anywhere an internal combustion engine would not normally run. Anyone have a picture of one of these beast. I can't say I have ever seen one.Patriot Performance AutoLincoln Power Mig 255CLincoln AC-225 StickVictor Journeyman O/AQuincy QT-5 Compressor
Reply:I imagine they make air chain saws as a matter of convenience . They make hydraulic saws for folks with a hydraulic source and electric chain saws, an air chain saw sounds like a natural.
Reply:I'm on a job right now and don't have it with me but I'll see what I can do when I get home next week.
Reply:I work in a mine where we use air powered chain saws underground, as well as a whole arsenal of other air tools. Air is more convenient underground where we have to make sure air quality is safe for workers. Air makes more sense for us, not because of risk for explosion (gas ignition), but we have to control emmissions from any gas powered engines. Also, electric cords running underground pose a high safety risk, so AIR POWER, Baby!

Reply:They would be good on applications that can't have moving fans to get clogged, air is really useful and can be used in areas that may have poor ventilation.

Reply:my, oh my... that looks like it could be a fun little toy to play with... anyone know how much they go for? i don't plan on ever getting one due to lack of neccessity. just curious.Later,Andy
Reply:Used a lot of hydraulic saws for concrete and things, never used a air powered one. But the saws go for $800 I think.
Reply:Friend of mine (another scuba instructor) used to have a contract for clearing debris from the dam gates out in Colorado. Said he used an air powered chainsaw quite a bit. Think it required one of the trailer mounted compressors to run it.Told him I could have shown him how to do it much faster with a little detonation cord.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc. |
