I've got a big dilemma guys and girls. I'm thinking about asking for an air compressor for Christmas, and the wife didn't cringe.I don’t want to spend over - or her to spend over $425 though. I have an old Sears Craftsman (It's green, and OLD and still works good, just not enough HP it always seems to be running). I have seen 2 Compressors that really peak my interest.1st is the Harbor Freight or Central Pneumatic Compressor for $339.99:http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=92504  Originally Posted by harborfreight site4HP, 29 GALLON COMPRESSORBUILT-IN DUAL QUICK CONNECT COUPLERS FOR CONVENIENT AIR HOSE CONNECTIONLong-life oil lubricated compressor with precision machined cast iron cylinder sleevePulley driven V-shaped pump for long lifeTwin capacitor start motor with thermal overload protectionBuilt-in dual quick connect couplers and dual pressure gaugesOil level indicator window for easy maintenance120 PSI max., 16.4 CFM @ 40 PSI, 15.7 CFM @ 70 PSI, 14.5 CFM @ 90 PSI, 13 PSI @ 110 PSI220 volt, 60 Hz, 23.5 amps (start up), 12.5 amps (no load), 20 ft. stripped power cord ready for 220 volt plug connection; Overall dimensions: 18'' W x 22'' D x 42'' H, Shipping weight: 228 lbs. Reply:I would not go with the HF unit at all.    I'm not sure whom is making the Kobalt machine for Lowes but if it is of good quality with the major parts made in the USofA I'd go with that.    Or shop around a bit more.   The local tractor supply has large selection of compressors. As to regulators and such, it isn't surprising that the compressor might be missing one.   You are better off distributing you air a tank pressure and using regulators close to the device.   Yes this implies plumbing and the purchase of fittings and regulators but in the end you will be better off.You should also think about filtering and air drying equipment if you expect to expand into the use of plasma technology or certain air tools.**********************************************Now obviuosly the above implies a rather permanet type compressor installation.   I highlighted the above a such because apparently you already have a portable solution that isn't up to the task.   At some point you are just better off with the larger compressors. As to the issue of space that is as always a real problem.    But if you go to the trouble of a permanent installation you can put the compressor in places you might not have thought about.   Such as a cellar, Outside, on a second floor in the garage or whatever.   Except for maintenance there really is no reason to have the thing taking up floor space in a garage.   So you put it someplace, that is out of the way and run pipe from there.   Obviously this is your home so you need to do it safely. What I'm getting at is moving away from the idea that it has to take up space where you need it the most.   No matter where it comes from a compressor with more capacity will be bigger.   If you need that capacity put it out of the way and run air lines.   Realize that you don't need to do everything at once too.Notably this is how most commercial and industrial facilities handle compressed air.   The compressors are often located far from the point of use.   Finally we didn't even hit upon the electrical issue related to a larger machine.  You are moving into a situation where a dedicated line or a properly sized line will be needed.I hope this helps a bit.   Dave
Reply:It helped me out alot, thank you so much Dave for helping me on this. Im now leaning towards he Kobalt, I'll just be looking for a regulator/air dryer. Jason
Reply:You know the old saying. "You can't go right with a Harbor Frieght tool." IMO, a grinder wheel, a creeper from HF?? Yes. A serious tool like a compressor??? NEVER. The only big tools I would buy from HF would be like the Honda gas powered air compressor, or the Emglo compressor. Not the other ones....And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:K O B A L T ! ! ! !  No question in my mind.
Reply:Depending on your current tank and motor, I'b be thinking about just getting a good set of jugs to throw on it. If you can't spring for a real compressor it's the cheapest way to get close.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:Ingersolrand makes a good compressor.  However I ended up with the 80 gal kobalt in my shop. (impulse buy).  I think Campbell Hausfield makes kobalts 60 gal and lower compressors and Kobalt actually makes the 80 gal unit. (thats why i went 80 gal over 60)  I have been very happy with my compressor.  I avoid harbor freight for tools that I plan on using more that 2 times.  However I will probably go buy a porta power there tomorrow for a project. :/ .
Reply:you would be crazy to consider a HF over a USA made Kobalt
Reply:You guys are great, honestly. Thank you all so much, i was really on the fence about this one and it was making me nuts. I'm going to tell her if she's leaning towards an expensive gift for me to get me the Kobalt compressor. I think this compressor maybe as 'real' as I will be needing. I look at alot of your shops and just drool. LOL.
Reply:Be VERY careful in believing the HP claims on the majority of the low end compressors!  I have one from Home Cheapo, made by Campbell Hausfield.  It is listed as 6.5 HP IIRC, but the pump is one commonly made for a 3-5 HP unit and the amp draw is only in the 15 range.  They rate the motor at the HP it will make just before it stalls and the smoke comes out.  The amp rating has to be accurate and that is set at the rated load.  I don't remember the formula offhand but there is a way to convert amps and voltage to HP.  According to that my (supposed) 6.5 HP is actually an honest 3 HP.  I got bit on this one and I won't be bit again.  My next compressor will be a 7.5 HP I-R and the amp draw is a little over 30, as it should be to make that number. There's no way you can have too much air delivery.  I think most tolls are under-rated as far as air consumption.  I can easily overwhelm the HD junker with a die grinder or DA sander.  Sandblasting is out of the question as the junk will barely keep 40 PSI going with the blaster running.
Reply:go name brand.. when you need parts they will be easy to find...
Reply:approx 748 watts per hp--divide 748 by your input voltage to get amps per hp.
Reply:I too was looking into the HF compressors.  I found out that they were made by speed air. from what I remember.  I would do a search. I ended up getting a IR  80gal. t-30.  But I probly would of bought the HF. if I didnt get a good deal on this one.
Reply:Ok, let me put it to you this way....I got one of those cheapy cutoff tools there.  Haven't even gotten around to wearing the first wheel down even 1/4 if that much or busting it.  Was using tool and all of a sudden it stops.  Then I noticed something inside was rattling.  I oil it like it sez every time I use it BTW.  Then it fell apart with a little shaking it like a maraca trying to figger out what was inside (like a christmas present only this was bad!) and it turned out to be  a spring that came out of I don't know where.  So if you want to throw out your money,  make a nice floral arrangement with it and then set it on fire.  Trust me.  You will get more use out of it heating your shop than buying a HF compressor!
