I dont do a huge amount of welding as a machinist but I quite enjoy it. Here's some of my stainless tig.And what can happen sharpening a tungsten on both ends.

Reply:surprisingly it didnt hurt at all, just a bit of a whack on the finger, and the tungsten actually snapped in half.although boy did it bleed when I pulled it out which was quite difficult, I had to really pull on it

Reply:kinda Ironic you took the picture of your finger with a "health and safety issues" paper slot behind it. lol make sure you take care of it... infection is a bad thing...

Reply:Things like that always hurt more coming out than they did going in.  Going in just feels like a quick whack.  You don't actually realize what happened till you see it.I got a finish nail in the thumb when I was in school.  I grabbed a pair of pliers and headed to the sink.  My classmates thought I was nuts, but it's got to come out.  I just as well pull it myself. My name's not Jim....

Reply:Well this is three days later:I didn't think to take a photo at first but as half the workshop was crowding around looking at it one of the other guys took a pic and I thought hey that's a good idea. They wanted me to pull it out right there but if I had i would have left a large blood trail all the way to the first aid room.Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2

Reply:I don't quite follow this "sharpen both ends" idea.OK, say I sharpen both ends. Then I glob up one end.So I flip around the tungsten. Then I glob up the other end.Now I have globs on both ends of the tungsten, with a collet and collet body in the middle. How do I get the tungsten out of the collet and collet body when there are big dingleberries on both ends of the tungsten?Originally Posted by srp61They wanted me to pull it out right there but if I had i would have left a large blood trail all the way to the first aid room.

Reply:Oh man! I've done the same damn thing, except mine was splintered!I had it chucked in the drill, and for one reason or another I wanted a longer taper. When I first started tigging, I would grind with the tip pointing up for reasons unknown. I had the drill pointed up, and the tip was right at the top where the opening for the shield is. I had a pretty deep gouge going on in that wheel, and I must have twisted the drill a bit and the tungsten caught. It broke into 3-4 pieces (it was a new stick) and one piece broke and splintered on the edge, which went through my left index I was using to guide it on the wheel. The big piece came out after some tugging, but there was a little sliver maybe 3/8" long and about half the thickness of the 3/32" tungsten stuck in me. Every time I grabbed it with pliers it would shatter and chip.I ended up getting an exacto and just slicing my finger open the whole length. The feeling of the tip of an exacto blade scraping against the fractured edge of the tungsten INSIDE MY FINGER gave me the heebee jeebies. After that, nails on a chalk board doesn't bother me anymore.Miller: 200dx, Bobcat 225, Passport, Powermax 45, Milwaukee: Dry Saw, MagDrill, grinders
Reply:Probably not a good idea to get radioactive metal in your body. The outside of your body easily deals with tiny doses of radioactivity, but if any gets inside and sits there it can't be good.Never sharped a tungsten by hand, use a drill!Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com

Reply:I appreciate the information and guidance.  I am not a pro-welder by any means.  I had a TIG machine but times got hard and I had to sell it.  I am planning to get another smaller one.  My main work will be on plain steel or aluminum no stainless. Thanks again,"G"ConductorX - The Volkswright Shophttp://volkswright.blogspot.com/http://bugwerks.blogspot.com/Miller DVI w/Spoolgun - Miller Plasma Cutter
