How do you guys dry in your puddle with scratch start? I weld a good bit with scratch start on stainless at work and am having a little bit of problems ending the puddle without it being all gray and sometimes with pinholes. Thanks in advance guys.
Reply:According to what I heard... if you cannot tapper off your amperage (that is, no foot pedal or finger control), all you can do is use run on and run off tabs. There seems to be no way arround it. You will get a crater (pinhole) no matter what you do. Regarding the grayness of the end of the bead, seems lack of shielding gass. I have seen videos of people breaking the arc and quickly getting the torch back in place to keep shielding the end of the bead. And after a few seconds, close the argon valve in the torch.I hope this helps,Mikel
Reply:You can leave the wire in the puddle and walk the arc up the wire then snap out. Still not the best and it leaves the wire stuck to the weld but it can help.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:pull your ground clamp off when you're ready to stop. just pull it off with a full puddle. Kind of hard to do all by yourself.Of course, it's going to arc and make a mess when you pull it, so you'll have to put a C clamp or something similar to put your ground on so you don't arc your work.Last edited by TimmyTIG; 02-06-2013 at 04:15 PM.

Reply:Thanks guys for the responses. I havent ever thought of pullin the ground. Makes sense. I do use a foot pedal some, and we dont have high freq buttons on the torch i use (see if i can get them to order one tho), so when i have to crawl all over a housing, the foot pedal goes bye bye haha.
