10 inch pipe - 321 stainless, 1.25" wall, welded out with 347 stainless wire, TIG all the way. compound bevel. That's a whole buncha welding, fellers. No pics, cameras not allowed in the refinery, might take a picture of something they don't want the outside world to see.
Reply:Wow, that's a lot of welding!Just out of curiosity, what settings did you use, how thick was the filler and how long did it take?
Reply:There's a decent amount of welding on 2"-3" xxh wall tube let alone 10"... 1.25" that is serious amount of welding..was it a test coupon, practice or an actual weld ??Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
Reply:It's an actual weld, double jointed two sections of pipe together. I didn't get it welded out, not even close it. We can only use 1/8 wire, so it's gonna take a while. maybe the day shift will weld on it today if they don't rain out, if not I'll be back on it tonight.I think I was at about 175 amps or so at the end of the night, running fillers.Last night I did a 12 inch XS 5 chrome, that's TIG all the way, too. I managed to finish that one right at quitting time. 450 preheat maintained all the way thru the weld with induction coils. They have some pretty good pipe to weld on this job. I saw some 18" stainless pre fabbed spools out in the laydown yard that had  caps on them about 3 inches wide. That'll be TIG all the way, too. Probably have to put about a 10 bead cap on them. They said that 10 inch pipe tonight was 80 pounds per foot.Last edited by TimmyTIG; 02-07-2013 at 08:05 AM.
Reply:yep, induction heaters on the chrome. They have Ameritek out there with a big ol' truck with a generator on it, they can do several chrome welds at a time. As for the bill, I guess Chevron can probably afford it OK, but the price of gas IS going up again.
Reply:Who you with out there. I wonder if the ua will ever get back in there.  Id like to work close to home.

Reply:Wonder why you can't use 5/32 or 3/16 wire. Chance of it getting cold lap? I've been welding on some 8' sced 80 lately and run my red-d-arc (just a rebadged miller) at around 180 on the fills
Reply:Do you constantly weld around and around or do you stop and let it cool ever?
Reply:It's in the welding procedure we can't use anything over 1/8th. We just welded without stopping, they came out and checked the interpass temp, it was only 130 degrees, we were allowed 350 max. That thick pipe can really disperse some heat.I didn't get to finish that weld, they let the day shift come in and put a raggedy cap on it.
Reply:Yea sorry to hear that timmytig. That always pisses me off when someone not only finishes your work but does it poorly.

Reply:Scaffold builders built a big frame for a hootch, we put plastic sheeting for a roof and sides. It rained like hell the first night, had to get a pallet to lay on to stay out of the water to weld the bottom.I told them that cap was low and needed to be redone, but I guess they disagreed, but they did have the QC come over to measure it with his tools, he said it was within code. Reply:scratch start on a big Miller diesel machine. I was welding so hot, every time I struck up a big chunk of metal blew out, burned me a couple times on the bottom. First time I ever wanted a leather jacket welding TIG.
Reply:Tommy,On chrome do you have a keyhole the root or can backfeed it like carbon and stainless.
Reply:that damn chrome is my nemesis these days. I've been backfeeding it, generally works pretty well, but I seem to get one bad spot in every root that needs to be ground out and fixed, and that stuff doesn't fix very easy. I had to grind out a spot 3 times before I got it right on the last one I did.I used to keyhole pretty much exclusively, but I found that backfeeding was faster. I might have to go back to it, maybe backfeed the bottom and keyhole the rest.
