I am completely new to welding and plan on purchasing a complete setup. I have been told and have read how good the millermatic 211 is and it does look like an awesome machine. I will be doing STRICTLY hobby work with it. I also looked at the Hobart 210mvp which seems to be a good machine. I can get the Hobart for $400 LESS than the 211. For just a garage toy I am thinking the hobart would work well for me? Is the Miller $400 better that I would need it?? All opinions welcomed. Thanks........Jim
Reply:There has been lots of discussion on this. It all depends on what you like. Here's a few other places you can do a search on besides here.http://www.hobartwelders.com/weldtalk/http://www.millerwelds.com/resources...ng-Discussions      From what I have been reading the 211 is the hot setup. Not sure how much more it would cost but by me you can get it for $1005.00http://www.weldersupply.com/products...es|Mig+Welding      Check your local suppliers and see what they say for prices and models. The suppliers by me don't even handle Hobarts. All MILLER and LINCOLN. Gotta go to big box store for the Hobarts. If you price used Millers they try to get new prices for old machines. I think Miller has a better resale value if you ever decide to up grade.      http://store.cyberweld.com/homigweneha2.html   210, $972.00    http://store.cyberweld.com/mi211migwewi.html     211 $1074.00     What are the prices you got ?   Where ?

Reply:The miller is gonna cost in the range of $1075. I can get a 210mvp for $780. I am sure the miller is better but like I said above do I need the greatest for just screwing around on weekends???
Reply:The Hobart is a Miller, Get the Hobart, You'll save money and get just as good of a product. I may be a bit bias...There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:Hobarts are sold through big box stores and other channels at a lower price point than Millers. Millers are sold through professional welding supply outlets.Millers are painted Miller Blue, Hobarts are gray.  There may, in my opinion,  be  a minuscle difference in output current ratings.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. You may pick two.Hobart AC/DC StikMate LXHarbor Freight AD HoodHarbor Freight Industrial Chop SawDeVilbis 20 Gallon, 5 HP Compressor
Reply:like nadogail said, you would have to look at the numbers. i think there are small differences but like you i'm just messing around with it in my garage. i was in the same situation as you a few months back and i decided to go with the Hobart and i'm very happy with it.
Reply:I bought a Hobart 210 MVP when I upgraded from a MillerMatic 140 Autoset.   I really wanted to go to the Miller 211 but the 160 buck price difference for my area I couldn't justify it.   So far I love the Hobart and it is virtually the same a the 211 sans the Autoset.  If my Miller dealer would have come down to less than 100 I would have bought the Miller.,
Reply:Thaks for the opinions. I want one for weekend fun and maybe even make a nice project. If this were needed for a business I might go higher end machine. I think the hobart will suite me well?

Reply:The Handler 210 MVP is a quality unit. I suspect you'll be pleased with it for home hobbyist type usage. There have been a few threads popping up lately about the MM 211 letting out smoke. Reply:Originally Posted by BD1From your postings, it appears to be closer to $300. Where you buying from ? Is this a welding supplier ?  Are you gonna need a tank ?  Where you gonna get supplies ? Might  wanna check on a package deal and see what comes up. There was a post where someone did this and got the  211 for only dollars more from a welding supplier.

I live 25 miles from Miller in Appleton WI and I have talked to a miller representative and he told me all the wire machines for Hobart and Miller are made in Appleton. The only difference in the two is the Hobart has a plastic drive housing and doesn't have auto set. The components on the inside are identical. Miller is blue and Hobart is white. I have a Hobart 210 MVP and it's one of the best welders I have ever used and I have used many welders in my 30 years of welding. Don't hesitate on a Hobart and save some money. By the way, Miller, Hobart, Smith, and many other companies are owned by Illinois tool works not international tool works.

Nice guy, especially considering, over past few years,he has sent me the entire Hobart MIG line-up to play with.  My statement for where the Hobart MIG units are built comes from him.

Reply:I may be fooling myself but AutoSet sounds like an electronic gizmo for people who can't read the wire speed/ voltage chart, or can't turn a dial themselves.  Just something to break.I have a tapped HH 140.  Infinite I'm sure is nice for some people with a wide variety of metals / thicknesses and situaations, but the limited choices of a tapped mean I have less to screw around with, and it's very easy to dial in.  When I get a good dial in for a particular wire / metal, I write it on the chart inside the hood so I don't forget how my machine likes to be set.  Easy peasy.Hobarts are fine machines, and far more than the home schmo will ever need.  You're done searching, go buy it.
Reply:Below is some info that I received from Hobart today.Hi Dan, All of the Handler’s, IronMan 230, StickMate’s, and Trek 180 are built in Troy, Ohio. Miller and Hobart used to be competitors prior to ITW purchasing both of us. Now, we use the brand differentiation to target different markets. Hobart is focused on the retail market and Miller is focused on the industrial market. We currently also manufacture the Champion 145 and Champion Elite at this facility. The Hobart products made in Appleton, WI are the AirForce plasma cutters and the EZ-TIG. We also manufacture the Miller ThunderBolt’s here in our facility. All of the Millermatics are built in the Integrated MIG Systems facility in Appleton.ESAB Migmaster 250 Hobart Ironman 230Multimatic 215TWECO Fabricator 181i & 211iHH125EZ - nice little fluxcore only unitMaxstar 150 STH - very nice

Reply:No right or wrong thing ment. Just knew you had quite a bit of knowledge with Hobart. That ironman 230 looks really nice but just much more than I need. Thanks for all the info.
Reply:OK, sounds like we need prices for the 230 !  It's never too much machine. Duty cycle is something to consider too. With the 230 you could weld almost non stop all day and not have to worry. Tack it up and weld, weld and more weld !

I also like that the 210 is more portable and the dual voltage. I don't. Have a plan to travel with it but once a friend knows I have it you never know?Last edited by hammer0419; 06-14-2012 at 10:16 AM.
Reply:OK , permission granted to go get it and all the goodies too !  You are right about when friendsknow what you have and what you can do. Believe me, I've been doing it for 40 years ! Reply:Good to hear on the 230. Best of luck. I am a parttime knifemaker so I. All kinds of jigs and toys to make with a welder. Let us know how it is.

Reply:as mention here before get a 220 volt machine. You may get a better deal on a package with CASH. You will need gas and other goodies too so it wouldn't hurt. Miller has a current rebate , machines, http://www.millerwelds.com/landing/build-with-blue/    HOODS, http://www.millerwelds.com/pdf/Helme...Flyer_Form.pdfIf you decide on a 120 volt machine check craigs list. People buy them and then upgrade to a 220 volt.
Reply:Thank You, I too an trying to decide between the Miller 211 or the HH  210 MVP, but looks like the HH210 MVP will do me just as well.Don't know if the Miller is worth the extra money. But I will look at the Miller rebate. Farm and fleet did have the HH 210 MVP on sale for $819.20 shipped through today, but I don't have the cash right now. Have to save up a bit. I do have a little 90 Amp I think it is, Century welder, 117-070, but would like something bigger. I don't like how the Century wire is hot all the time either. But then again, I don't have much welding experience. A fellow that I know is an welding instructor, put a nice bead on 16 gauge with my century, where I was blowing holes in it.

Reply:Yeah, TSC was $900.00 .I noticed on the heat, when on 120,  4, 5,6,and 7 are the only ones you are shown to use. Is 4,5,6, and 7 like 1,2,3 and 4 heat settings when on 120Volt?
Reply:You have chosen a good unit. The new 210 MVP i understand does have a metal wire drive unit. Mine has the plastic one but works like a champ. I own both units (the 211 was payment from some one) and they both are great units. I see very little difference in either unit but when welding the HH210 seems to have better or should i say more stable arc and i do think the puddle wets out a little better on my 210. I have run .035 and .030 as well as .024 in both units. They both handled the different wires superbly I also have a spool gun that i use a lot on the 210. You will love your 210 MVP i am sure of that. Reply:Are you guys running a 30 amp breaker for these units?I think the manual said they pull 24 amps on 220, So I thought 30 Amp breaker is what I need.I did not get the welder yet.
