I'm going to be getting a stick welder here soon, looking for something affordable, like the tombstone. What are some other good ones around that range + or - $100. Any help appreciated!!
Reply:Hobart Stickmate, Miller Thunderbolt, Lincoln Idealarc, Mill dialarc. Pretty much any AC/DC transformer machine that you can demo and still runs is a safe bet. Even the old montgomery wards, westinghouse, GE, airco, etc.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:Lincoln AC 225s are the most common welder around and they usually sell on Craigslist for around $100Edit: if you post your location we might be able to find you something good in your areaCraftsman 90 amp Arc welder
Reply:Plenty of AC only 220v transformer machines out there in that price range. I see them listed on CL fairly regularly. Going rate for one is typically between $50-150, but I've seen a few for even less at yard sales. The name brand units like Lincolns and Millers tend to go on teh higher sides, while store brand units like Craftsmans, Montgomery Wards, Daytons, century etc tend to be on the lower end. The store units are as good or better than the name brand units many times. I regularly see infinately adjustable "off brand" machines selling for less than teh taped Lincoln AC 225's.AC/DC machines usually run $100 more, but I've seen a few selling below $150 on occasion.Even better are the industrial grade machines like Miller Dialarcs or Lincoln Idealarcs. They are big and heavy, but many times I'll see them priced at less than their box store counterparts for what ever reason. The arc quality of these are much better on average than the home owner grade boxes and well worth spending a few extra bucks on in my opinion if you locate one at a really good price.Nice thing about most of these machines is that they are tanks and hold their value used. It's almost impossible to kill one and chances are high if you want to upgrade to an AC/DC machine in a year ore so, you'll be able to get almost every penny back. I've even seen a few members here who have bought some ugly beasts dirt cheap, cleaned them up really nice and sold them at a reasonable profit.I'd avoid any inexpensive 110v stick machine. Most simply don't have the power to do much. There are a few exceptions once you start to break $400 or so like the Thermal Arc TA 95S and the Esab 161 IIRC. Both are nice little inverters at a reasonable price and I've seen a few of the TA's listed used on rare occasions..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
