I've just started school but been welding for a while and a company came into our class tonight and talked to us about a few possible job openings, they're fabricating skids using 5/32 7018 on 7/16 steel in the flat position and to be eligible for the job I would have to pass a 3G vertical plate test and they're allowing a 1/2'' gap, any tips on how to practice up for this? It's not a make or break job, just something to do while i'm in school. They're not requiring any job experience as long as I can pass the test and the pay is great for a starter job."Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. Reply:Run lots of vertical for practice. Biggest issue I find with students is that they haven't yet learned to read the puddle when they get to vertical. Once they learn and master this vertical is easy. Since you say 1/2" gap, I'm guessing they want you to do a 3/8" test with backing, but you'd need a bit more info from them to know exactly what they want as far as the test. I'd assume they want you  to run 7018 for the test. Here's a pict CEP posted up on the test parameters.  If you prep your coupons this way I believe it would cover what they want. Reply:If you have or know someone who has a compact bender you can bend your coupons with it to see the results of your welds. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:CEP why you so good with vertical  stick welds. Tell me your secrets.
Reply:Who said I was any good? Just like DSW said in post #2, when you learn to read the puddle, and know what it needs, that is 99% of the battle.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:If your doing the 3/8 test its pretty easy. Getting comfortable is very important and don't over heat the plate.
