G'day, just wondering if any machinests out there could help me out with the general lay out for making sprockets, can I do it with a drill press cos I do not have access to a mill.
Reply:There is a number of things to concider..O.D. of the piece..Number of teeth..Ratio your looking for...(O.D. of the piece)I've made hundreds of sprocket blanks that were drawn out on a print and then they get sent out to a sprocket cutting place for the teeth to be cut..Take a look here..http://www.daltonbearing.com/Supplie...et-&-Gear.asp?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Thanks Zap... That helps...
Reply:Hey Mat, I wouldent recomend making a piece like a sprocket with a drill press. Not only would it take ungodly amount of time but would be out of whack. Unless your making a sproket with 4 teeth its never going to be true enough to hold a powered chain. Send it out- there are machine shops online that are pretty trick  And if your like me and want to try it any way, maybe this would work- take the distance from link center next link center on ur chain. Then lay it out on the metal circle in an X pattern with each center punch next to the other the same distance u measured. Then 3.14 i dont know the rest..
Reply:+1.  I wouldn't even want to make one on a mill with a rotary table.  It's just not worth the effort, you can buy one or have it made by those who are already tooled for it and it'll come out cheaper and better made in the long run.Hobart Stickmate LX AC/DC, Millermatic 252 & 30A spoolgun, Thermal Arc 185 TIG, Miller BWESmith Oxy-AcBridgeport 2J , South Bend 42" 9AHusky 7.5 HP 22.3 CFM 80 gal compressor
Reply:Try Spacely sprockets. if they don't have what you need, try Cogswell cogs. Uhh, before you internet search, this is 'Jetson's' humor..... But google 'em anyway. I bet someone jumped on it years ago!!!And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
