Howdy,Hoping for some metallurgy advice here. I needed some screw jacks for a job, and decided to make my own heavy duty ones. I caught these 2" by 9" studs for cheap on clearance and trying to get the most out of the deal. The B16 grade apparently stand for heat treated 0,50 % carbon, CrMoV alloy, which withstands temp up to 750 - 1100 degrees Fahrenheit without losing the properties, according to different sources on the web. I can use them as is, but I would like to weld on some pipe extension, unless im gonna lose much of the strength. Could I preaheat and stick weld them? Or may be tig braze them for less heat input?The load would be along the axis, so the welds wouldnt need to be terribly strong, but I wanna do it the best way. Oh, btw I have some 309ss and even a few certanium rods I picked up at a garage sale. They were stored in a regular plastic rod tube, and I wonder if the go bad with air exposure? Never stick welded stainless, but have decent amount of experience with 7018 and 6011.
