My father made a big pizza pan of stainless. It's 60 years old, he's dead but I don't think it was the pan that killed him. I want a bacon pan for the outdoor grill, I think for heat distribution aluminum would be the material of choice. Would 6061 be toxic?
Reply:A lot of science is indicating the probability that aluminum is toxic.
Reply:I wouldn't cook on aluminum. I have ditched all our aluminum pots and pans. Maybe if you clad the aluminum in steel or something. Me personally I like cooking on cast iron the bestMiller Multimatic 255
Reply:My wife and I use a 1/2 size sheet pan(aluminum) with a rack in it. This allows grease to fall off the bacon and keeps the bacon flat. Cooking a whole pound in the oven. These can be found at a commercial kitchen supply, come in a lot of sizes with or without racks, inexpensive as well.RegardsDave
Reply:We have all kinds of aluminum pots, pans, and cooking sheets. I don't think the low heat of cooking brings any bad stuff out of the aluminum.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
Reply:If I remember right it's not the cooking on aluminum ,it's the scraping with utensils that deposit aluminum in food
Reply:Food cooked on or coffee perked in fresh clean aluminum tastes like aluminum. We don't use much uncoated aluminum any more, but when we did we had to always make sure the surface was seasoned much like cast or you would get that aluminum taste. Was never too concerned about health as the taste."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:I suspect that it is worse than these stories indicate. As far as scraping causing the distribution problem, everything is water soluble to various extents.Aluminum is not something you eat or drink and then get rid of.It accumulates in your body for your whole life.http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...1013090451.htmhttp://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...1021085114.htm
Reply:I don't want to bias or any thing ,But the cheap aluminum pots and pan  that were uncoated were the main cuplrit. Much like the crap sold in asian and mexican stores today. You can almost feel the oxides just by touching that stuff.
Reply:Get a cast iron griddle pan and be done with it. There's a reason every diner has a cast iron flat top grill. It holds the heat better and will outlast you.
Reply:Willie it sure is entertaining to look up the evils of aluminum cookware. Here's a fun one http://www.happycookingco.com/hidden-dangers.cfm This a more serious answer http://www.alz.org/alzheimers_diseas...alzheimers.asp These guys break down some common uses for various grades http://www.meyer-mab.com/technical-information/ (Note to self-No more Beer) This one, if is doesn't put you to sleep, will demonstrate that like zombies in the zombie apocalypse, aluminum is inescapable. If all this gives you indigestion DON'T TAKE ANTACIDS they are made with aluminum compounds. Best advice I can give you is, if you make a pizza pan out of aluminum don't eat the pan, you might choke on it.And Jane says: http://www.takepart.com/article/2013...you-alzheimers---Meltedmetal
Reply:Well my thought is almost everyone in the US uses aluminum foil for cooking. So I'm sure it would be alright.Craftsman 90 amp Arc welder
Reply:I'm making chili in an anodized aluminum pot right now.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:I know absolutely nothing about the toxicity of Al, but having spent a few years as a line cook I would say for a bacon pan it would be a terrible choice for a material. You want something with a decent heat capacity to rend the fat or you have to  be very careful not to end up with either burnt or chewy bacon.Last edited by Flammino; 11-16-2014 at 07:26 PM.
