Hi all,First time here!Do you guys think this will be strong enough to hold about 300 lbs on the top shelf, then 200 lbs on the middle shelf, and another 300lbs on the bottom shelf?I'm kind of worried about how the 2 back vertical supports will have to hold onto 500 lbs and might start bending the steel square tube. The specs are 1x1x.120 wall mild steel fully welded. Please let me know what you guys think! I just want to make sure this will be safe for the end user.
Reply:Hello and welcome.Looks like 1" square tube. Dead weight in compression doesn't worry me too much. It's the bending force applied by the brackets in the middle that might worry me. In reality it's not 500 lbs on a vertical, it's 250 lbs on each, since 1/2 the weight goes to each upright. Also your brackets are reasonably steep. They look to be greater than 45 deg angles. That's good since they put most of their force down and not back like they would if the angles were flatter. One easy way to find out how sturdy it is is to put a piece of 3/4" plywood on your rack and load it with something heavy, say yourself. I'd even give it a little light jump or 2 to shock load it some. Stand on a ladder with something you can hold onto if the thing wants to give, say a rope from the ceiling, and see how it reacts. If you have a helper, you can measure the amount of deflection at the front when unloaded, then load the unit and measure it again to see how much the piece starts to bend.I have a friend who is huge into aquariums, ponds and fish stuff. That's his side business. From working with him on projects like this, the biggest concern I'd have with yours is how flat the shelves are. If they are bowed, there's a high chance that they may crack a tank. The shelves really need to be dead flat, not bowed or twisted..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:for that reason, aquariums are mostly placed on a piece of plywood AND a rectangular pice of soft material (insulation, eg. styrofoam), with the same dimensions of the aquarium. That way, the "high points' (and deflection of the frame) will sink into the styrofoam and the load of the aquarium will be evenly distributed.
Reply:This has got me worried.  You have 500 lbs of torque on two welded joints. If the haz on these has annealed  the steel I could see this failing in a spectacular fashion.  If you had a way to mount the unit to a wall is feel a whole lot better about it. Reply:I agree that will be the failure point. If you run legs down from the front of the middle shelf to the bottom shelf I wouldn't be to worried. Then the next failure point would be the same area between the top and middle shelves. I'm not sure about it to be truthful. It might be strong enough to hold the 300lbs but I don't know how much safety factor it would have.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:please delete - mistake here!
Reply:Thank you guys for all the great replies.  What if this was added? It should spread the load evenly.
Reply:Ahh well img didnt work through phone. Basically it would be a crossbar from the other angled bracket to the front for each shelf
Reply:Anything to widen the stress in that area will work. It could be as simple as putting another piece of tubing up to the brace. It would probably be strong enough right up against the other tube but putting a 1-2" space between them and it definitely would be.  I think I would put one at the bottom with about a 2" space between the tube and one at the top right up against the upright tube. That would essentially make it a 1 x 4 tube for the bottom and a 1 x 2 tube for the top.Last edited by irish fixit; 11-18-2014 at 12:16 PM.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:How many gallons are the tanks?Magazines have issues, everything else has problems

Reply:Either would work. But I think one of the options below would look better.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:Like Irish said,  go with the red.  That will be enough and they look better.Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler
Reply:There's too much weight cantilevered. You need to make the verical supports deeper (not wider, or necessarily more of them). Double them up with another full length member. you could also space the doubled up one back and form a "truss" and further increase strength. Or go with the red additions above, or even tip them back so they form a zigzag with the existing angle supports if you like the look.Last edited by MikeGyver; 11-18-2014 at 02:25 PM.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:Going against a wall? As Robert Hall mentioned above (fasten it to the wall) add some tabs to lag bolt it into some studs near the top and middle. That would be the least noticeable although probably not as good as some of the other suggestions.HH 187Miller Bluestar1EAHP AlphaTig 200X
